The choke plate should be closed when a cold start is attempted. It opens as the vehicle warms up. As for the backfire you should check the ignition points and condenser.

SOURCE: The car is overheating water is backing into the

several possable problems, with car cooled down, start engine and turn on a/c, this should make your cooling fan come on, if it doesn't problem is in that circuit or fan itself. if the cooling fan comes on, watch temp gauge when it reaches half way up gauge carefully go touch upper and lower hoses, both should be warm. if one is still cool that is a flow problem and could be the thermostat or a failing water pump.

SOURCE: 2005 volkswagen beetle, disappearing coolent

Take it to a mechanic and ask for a coolant leak test, they attach a unit to the header tank which will detect anything that may indicate the head gasket is leaking. Should not cost more that a few dollars.
Cruise control issue is not related to the coolant loss, have them do a code check on the vehicle too.

99 volkswagon beetle check engine llight is on. the scanner tool said cold start sensor?? what could that mean? approx. how much at the most will it cost? PLEASE HELP

This is the sensor that control cold start up idle just like a choke use to do on the old carborated systems. It allows for the car to idle slightly higher and tells the ccu to adjust the air to fuel ratio for cold starting. Since it is a volkswagen it could be rather expensive.

2001 VW Beetle. The driver's front seat adjuster

I'm assuming you have manual adjustment seats. There is a spring underneath the seat that locks the end of the lever into corresponding notches in the seat frame rail. That spring has either fallen off or broken.

I have a 1970 Beetle. Starting problem?

Hi there, it might be your choke. This was happening to mine, it kept sticking and flooded the engine if I stopped before the engine had properly warmed up. Had it replaced, problems gone.

Hope this helps.
