Question about 1991 Saturn SL1

1 Answer

Air Conditioner won't blow cold

I have a 1991 Saturn SL1 and I don't know what kind of refrigerant it needs. I was told it was R-12 but I can't find it.

Is this something easy to do? Can I do it by myself? Or do I have to go to a mechanic?

All you need to do is have the system pulled down and convert it to r-134. You can get a DIY kit at most parts stores for about 25 bucks. The system will hold around 3-4 cans of r-134.

If it is not blowing out enough cold air it appears you may be low on refrigerant. The latter will cause the compressor to short cycle with resultant warmer than normal output temps.

If you can turn the compresser with your hand freely ? then you can just replace the clutch...if not, the whole compressor needs to be replaced..

Air conditioner is blowing hot air out what should i add

On a 92 you might still have the old refrigant that you cannot mix with R134A. You will need to adapt the system the new R134A (gaskets etc....). Does the compressor come on?

2003 accord air conditioner

Hi there. When a compressor is replaced, two things are in fact being replaced - both the compressor and the refrigerant (Freon) and if the problem is resolved as a result which of those two replaced elements caused the original problem? Well you will never know and so before the compressor is replaced you need to have you’re A/C system recharged – it’s by far the most cost effective initial thing to do. In general A/C systems loose at least 10% of their effectiveness each year through loss of refrigerant and so given the age of your car; it’s the first thing to focus on. A professional A/C centre will also be able to tell you whether your compressor is working properly after having a refrigerant recharge by the monitoring the operating pressures in the A/C system.

Air conditioning not blowing cool air

To get the refrigerant in you have to have a technician purge the system first. Hope that helps.
