The 2.2 eco is a chain driven engine it does not have a timing belt but if for some reson the chain were to break I would imagine there would be some damage but having the chain break would be something I personally have never seen. Hope this helps

If you have gotten as far as that , I would suggest changing the timing chain and gears just to increse performance and fuel efficiency.

If the timing chain just skipped a few teeth will it damage the heads with continuously trying to start it?

Urgently change the chain, it will cause wreckage in the engine!

Do not crank it, it will cause the engine cycle rotation and damage it.

My timing chain has snapped

I assume it's your timing belt, not a chain, which rarely, if ever snap. Depending on the make of the car and the engine you may, or may not, have serious engine damage.. DO NOT ATTEMPT to start the car, have it towed to your shop of choice. If there is no engine damage a timing belt replacement generally will run you 2 or 3 hundred bucks...if you did serious engine damage you may have to decide if the car if worth the money to have it repaired. What you need to know is whether your car has an "interference" or "non-interference" type engine.. In an interference type engine if the timing belt breaks the valves will "interfere" with the pistons as they travel up if the timing belt breaks, which results in generally catastrophic engine failure.. non-interference engines generally suffer little or no engine damage with a broken timing belt.. I broke a timing belt on my 1990 Toyota Supra going 70mph, but it was a non-interference engine and after having the belt replaced it was fine.. here is a good list someone put together on what type of engine is in your car.. you should find the engine type either marked on the engine or on a label under the hood, or the owners manual.. good luck.

Is it an interference or noninterference engine? Think timing chain has broke

Broken timing chain is a very large problem, if it happened while engine is running. Bent/broken valves and such. Makes a LOT of noise, and engine stops immediately.

Your question doesn't include make/model/year, so your question isn't possible to answer. Doesn't really matter, though, if your timing chain broke. That's pretty rare. Timing belt, yes. Chain, no.

Does the 2007 Prius 1.5 L have an interference engine?

this yours? the real name? Great question, I dont know.
the NON X engine IS !

gasoline (1.5L, VIN B, 5th digit, 1NZFXE engine)

That X means:
making it a simulated Atkinson cycle, engine. not OTTO.

with a very unique cam timing and high compression. 13:1

the engine is cam chain driven.
so if you dont let the chain scream ,what's the worry.?

on many High CR engines, the piston chases the exhaust valves
closed very very close, so close the engine is interference.
i find nothing on the web to say if X , is or not.
also what about VVT.?
what if it failed, in the wrong spot, owner ignore DTCs
and the chain screaming. then what? (nobody knows, it seems)

id love to do the check by hand, but not many motors sitting about to do that.
the non X engines FSM warns that there are interference issues.
so does the X get that same warning, ?
if worred buy the FSM.... and tell the world. as its not on the web.
check out the wild cam, timing and even wilder, VVT timing ranges...

Chain off, spark plugs out.
if the chain snaps
there is no VVT with no chain.
so the hand check method works
valves at max open. (watch the lifters)
spin crank, no chain 360 degrees.
does it hit? felt by hand?, the non X does.
repeat for each side, intake exhaust.

i spin crank not cam to feel it, as cranks is smoother.
some engines btw are SO close they only hit hot and at high RPM.
a good spec, for this is 0.040" valve to piston clearance at all times.
at normal temps and presssures and RPM.

I am just wondering if my 1997 nissan pickups engine is a free clarence motor. 2400 4 cylinder motor.

The 2.4L engine has a chain driven camshaft and is an interference type engine meaning that if the chain should fail the valves can be damaged by being struck with the pistons.

Is the 86 nissan z24 engine an interference design?

the 2.4L is not listed as an interference engine, but if you lost a timing chain at high rpm;s you still may have done some damage to the valve train.

Timing belt broke...was told i need new this right?

The 2.4L four has a belt and is not an interference engine according to the Gates timing belt application chart for your vehicle (check it out on The 2.7L V-6 doesn't show that it needs a belt--so it has either a timing chain and gears or just gears. If the belt broke on the 2.4L four, you should be able to put on a new belt and go. The engine should not be damaged.

If the timing chain on the V-6 broke then engine damage may have occurred. Chain engines are sometimes not listed as interference because breaking a chain is so rare. The damage would probably be bent valves and damaged piston tops. The labor involved in repairing all that might cost more than just getting a rebuilt engine and putting it in.
