What if i have the #1 plug dead center and the time line set on dead center but my timing light is on #4 plug and its on but i know thats not right when i put it on #1 plug i cant see the line on the desperter

6-8 degrees before top dead center. Be sure to remove & block the distributor vacuum line before setting the timing. After the adjustment replace the line. Good luck!

What is the timing specs for a 1968 ford thunderbird


The timing specifications for that vehicle with all V-8 engines 302, 390, 428, 429 are the same.

Spark Plug Type: BF32

Spark Plug Gap: .034 In. - .035 In.

Ignition Point Dwell Angle: 27 Degrees

Ignition Point Gap: .021 In.

Ignition Timing: 6 Degrees Before Top Dead Center

Engine Compression: 150 Psi.

Engine Idle Speed:

302-390-428 Engines: 625 Rpm M/T or 550 Rpm A/T

I know how to kinda do the timing but when i have the timing light on the marks i dont know which mark is suppose to be the 4 deg tdc.


Your auto's spec sheet should tell you what your timing degree should be. For example, a 1969 Ford 429, 6 Degrees BTDC @ 550 rpm in drive gear - with automatic trans, with a firing order of 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. All this means is that you want to line up the pointer on the timing light with the 6° timing mark when the engine is idling in gear at 550 rpm. As you can see, it also says something about "BTDC" for this Ford. There is also an "ATDC." "Before Top Dead Center" and "After Top Dead Center" - top dead center is the point where the piston reaches the highest point in the cylinder and that is when the compression is the greatest. Now, your timing marks with have a line labeled "0" with marks above and below it, and depending on which way the wheel rotates, you will see the lines before the "0" (BTDC), or after the "0" (ATDC)

With the vacuum line(s) dis-connected from the distributor and plugged up, the engine timing should be set at 4 degrees before top dead center idling at 650 rpm, and if it has California emissions then the ignition timing should be set at 12 degrees before top dead center while idling at 700 rpm. If the timing specifications listed on the vehicle emission label are different from these specifications then the specifications listed on the emission label are to take precedence.

Use a timing light to check the ignition timing, (and be sure that the timing light is connected to the #1 spark plug wire) and if the ignition timing is not to specifications then loosen the distributor hold down and turn the distributor until the timing marks move into position and are aligned to the timing specification, then tighten down the distributor hold down and then re-check the timing to be certain that the distributor did not move out of timing when the distributor was tightened down, then re-connect the vacuum line(s) to the distributor and re-set the engine idle back to where it was if it had to be changed. Be sure that the timing scale and marker down on the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley and the engine block are clean and they will show up well, and you can also mark them with chalk so the engine can be timed easily.

If you connect the vacuum line(s) to the distributor and the engine runs poorly then all of the vacuum line(s) to the distributor will have to be checked and then connected to their proper vacuum source.

If the ignition wires are leaking secondary voltage you might get a good secondary voltage shock if you touch the distributor to turn it. Let me know if you need help connecting and using a timing light, or if you require any further assistance.

Hi: 1st thing to do is pull #1 Spark Plug AND before you Crank The Engine PULL COIL WIRE so your car does'nt Start During Your ommpression Test.Once you have commpression coming out #1 Spark Hole.Then follow the #1 Spark Plug Wire up to the Distributor Cap-Now Mark that #1 Wire with a Marker ,Sting any Way you'll know where it is on your Distributor.Now PULL Distributor Cap and see where the Rotor Is,It should be Pointing toward that #1 Spark Plug Wire. Could be a Little Past.. If all This Lines up and Tested Out right,Then ALL you Need to Do is Clean and Mark Your Timing to What you Car is in Time, Could be TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) or 4-8 Degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center.And then put coil wire in and attach your timing light to #1 Wire And Loosen the Distributor Hold Down Bracket Under Distributor.Where You Still have a Little Resistance to Move it Clock or Counter Clock Wise. Ok, If you know which tower the no.1 plug wire is in, set the distributor to that tower on the cap. Rotate the distributor withe the cap on and key on , slowly in both directions unril you hear a spark pop at the npo 1 plug wire. Put he plug in the wire and lay it on the engine so it is grounded. When you get a spark you are on the mark.

How to set the timing on a ford ltd 1982


POINT TYPE IGNITION SYSTEMS
  1. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the front of the engine.
  2. If they appear dirty, clean the timing marks with a wire brush. Once clean, apply white paint to the marks to make them more visible.
  3. Attach a dwell meter/tachometer to the engine.
  4. Attach a timing light according to the tool manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Unfasten the distributor vacuum line at the distributor and plug the vacuum line. A small bolt, center punch, golf-tee, or similar object is satisfactory for a plug.
  6. Check to make sure that all of the wires, whether disconnected or attached to the timing light or tachometer, clear the fan and belts.
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
  8. Adjust the idle to the correct setting, if needed.
  9. Aim the timing light at the timing marks and depress the trigger on the light. If the marks on the pulley and the engine are aligned when the light flashes, the timing is correct. Turn OFF the engine, then remove the tachometer and the timing light. If the marks are not in alignment, proceed with the following steps.
  10. Loosen the distributor lockbolt (a special distributor wrench is available) just enough so that the distributor can be turned with effort.
  11. With the timing light aimed at the pulley and the marks on the engine, turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation to ****** the spark, and in the opposite direction of rotor rotation to the advance spark. Align the marks on the pulley and the engine using the flashes of the timing light.
  12. When the marks are aligned, tighten the distributor lockbolt and recheck the timing to make sure that the distributor did not move when you tightened the lockbolt.
  13. After timing has been set, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 17–25 ft. lbs. (23–34 Nm).

While pointing the timing light at the timing marks, the other hand can rotate the distributor body to reach the correct alignment
