Everywhere on the engine intake area, use a can of carburator cleaner and spray around the top of the engine, u will hear a change in the engine sound and idle speed when u hit a vacuum leak.

normally engine light is emisions related (02 sensor, airflow sensor, vacume leak, diesel particulate filter etc...) you can check for vacume leak yourself. If not have it scaned by a mechanic

My 1999 dodge ram 5.2 liter 5 speed will start up fine then..

It runns OK when you first start it? This is a stick shift truck? They are prone to a vacume leak in the bottom of the intake manifold. To checki this pu;; the PCV valve out of the valve cover and plug the hole in the cover and let the valve just hang there, Remove the hose from the other side valve cover and plug the valve cover ( the hose goes to the air filter housing ) Run the truck with both of these plugged and if it fixes the problem. Remove the intake manifold and change the gaskets. This is a common problem and for a while there the dealers were covered up with this job.

check for vacume leaks on intake and other vacume hoses. random misfire is also usually a clogged fuel filter or pressure regulator. could also be a cam or knock sensor. are their any trouble codes.
