I have constant power from starter to the alternator....as well as crank and no start


There is always constant power to the alternator because there is no residual magnetism in an alternator to produce current. If you have a spark (dead short) when you earth out the alternator body this would indicate a fault probably in a diode. However if the alternator is properly earthed through the mounting bolts then there would not be a spark just a flat battery. I suggest that you take it to an accredited auto electrician and have it checked out.

When I replaced the starter in 1992 chevy suburban the small wire that goes to the cylenoid is it supposed to have constant power?


If the wire goes to the alternator, then yes. The wire from the starter relay that goes to the "S" terminal of the solenoid should not be hot. There should be a large hot wire from the battery but there may also be a hot wire from the back of the alternator. These 2 would both go on the large post of the solenoid.

2003 ford escape, trying to locate a 12v drain on battery. pulled all the fuses and drain is still there. is there a way to pull the relays? are there any other powered items i can check for draw?


If you can easily get to your alternator connections, carefully, I repeat, carefully, remove the heavy positive battery wire going to the + terminal of the alternator. DO NOT let it ground out! If the drain drops off when you remove the wire, you have a leaking diode inside the alternator and it will need to be replaced. Also, with the engine cold, feel the alternator. Sometimes it gets very hot from the constant 12V drain. As far as pulling the relays, yes you can remove each one until your drain drops off. But don't pull on them too hard, they may have some sort of release clip holding them in place. The relay box is located under the hood next to the battery near the left fender:

Batery light would come on when accelerating up to freeway speed or when going over a big hill and head lights would dim. Mechanic said alt/gen/bat all good, car still seemed to drive fine otherwise....


the voltage regulator is bad inside the alternator. it seems to be getting hot and kicking off the charging system. the last time it has drained your battery.

Hello, my name is Ben. Most likely someone has hooked up your radio wrong. It is supposed to be powered by a "constant hot" power source. It sounds like yours is hooked up to a power source that only comes on when the key is turned on. You will need to change where the radio gets power from to a constant hot wire.

Hot alternator


Hi,
There are 3 reasons this will be happening:
  1. There is a massive amount of current draw from the battery which is causing the alternator to run at a constant maximum charge rate. So look for any equipment you may have running on your truck - e.g large stereo system/amplifiers that they are not putting too much load on the battery.
  2. If you have and external regulator then the regulator needs to be replaced as it is causing the alternator to charge at maximum output.
  3. Make sure that if it is close to an exhaust manifold that the heat shield is back in place, heat coming from the exhaust manifold can also cause this problem.

I think my alternator is bad would this also


NO. The alternator feeds the battery, not your cars systems. The car systems are powered by the battery and the battery is constantly charged by the alternator. If your radio doesn't have power, check the fuse first, then the hot lead to the radio with a test light do not ry to "spark" the wire to test for power as this will blow the fuse. A radio fuse is only a 5 or 10 amp fuse and is very easy to blow out.. If the radio is getting power then the radio has to be replaced

When my car is driving it makes a ticking noise and will not hold a charge to the battery


Get a multimeter and hold it on the battery contacts. With the power off, it should read around 11V. With the engine running, it should read around 13.5V.

If the power off voltage is under 11V, you need a new battery.
If the power on voltate is under 13V, you need an alternator.

Is the clicking noise at a constant rate, or is it related to the speed of the engine? In the latter case, it's probably a physical defect in the alternator. If it's more constant, it may be a wiring issue - there could be an arcing problem. That could be a problem within the alternator, or somewhere between the alternator and battery.

Before you mess with the alternator, UNPLUG the battery - it's very easy to short the main battery contact with the alternator housing, which is connected to ground/negative.

Wont hold charge in expedition


  1. Check the wiring of the new radio installed as follows..
  2. Disconnect battery ground
  3. verify radio ground wire is grounded to metal
  4. verify radio hot wire (normally red and thick) is connected to a power source that is off when the ignition key is in the "off" position.
  5. verify that the always hot wire is connect to a constant 12v power supply even with the ignition off.
  6. make sure the pwr antenna wire if not used is taped at the tip and not touching any metal.
  7. verify that all speaker wires are connect correctly and not shorted to ground.
  8. connect battery ground you may get a small spark if your courtesy lites work.
  9. start engine verify your battery is charging by disconnecting the battery ground cable while the engine is running, it should continue running if it don't, alternator maybe bad.
  10. If it continues running problem solved..
