Question about 1993 Buick LeSabre

Open Question

Try to start car with the key and it will not turn over but i can start the car from underneath the car off the soleniod

My car was running perfectly fine. I drove it home and parked it. then the next day i got in my car to leave and it would not start or even turn over. I thought it might had been because my battery was dead , but i jumped it , an still nothing. Later that same day i had someone come look at it , and it seemed i had drove my car until it was completely out of oil. So I filled the oil and put water in it. Still will not start. I have no idea what the problem is. But i do know that its not the engine , because when you get underneath the car , and jump start it off the battery wire on the solenoid it will crank , start , and run for about 30 seconds tops. Then cut back off.... What is the problem with my car?????

Check battery cables for tightness, make sure they are not corroded. If all is good, i would suspect a bad starter. Next time it gives you trouble, if you can access it from under hood or underneath, try tapping on it with a wrench or hammer while someone turns the key and see if that helps.

The engine will not turn over

If you car has an alarm try depressing the Valet switch and de-activate the alarm. What happens with car alarms is they are auto activated when the battery is dead and re-connected. Also go to the starter itself and find the solenoid. There are usually one or 2 single wires attached to the rear of the soleniod. One is an ignition bypass and the other is 12VDC from the start switch. Have someone turn the key and check for 12VDC on the wires. Only one of them will have voltrage when the key is turned to start. If you have 12DC on the wire terminal with the key turned to start then you have a bad starter / start soleniod.

Cejck the primary and secondary resistance of your coil - you may also want to check the voltage drop of your battery when your starter soleniod is engaged as well. If the tarter soleniod is starting to go it will pull too much current.

When i turn the key to turn on only the lights and power work car

check the starter solenoid or the starter! You can run a jumper cable from the hot only on the battery to the starter and touch the hot bolt on the starter soleniod and if it dont turn over then the starter or soleniod is out. Put a bold into the end of the jumper cable so you can touch the starter easier!

your starter, solenoid or ignition is no good. but my first choice,i think your solenoid is shorted because when you hook up the battery,it cranks but does not start.that means your ignition switch is still working.
