Where are timing marks located on an unidentified vehicle?

Usually on the harmonic balancer. It's located off the crank shaft in the front outside of the engine. There should also be a pointer attached to the engine block that you use to line up the correct timing marks

I need to check the timing on my 67 ford 100, where are the timing marks located?

Usually the timing marks are on the front crankshaft damper/pulley. You should see a pointer protruding and pointing to the radiator.

Sometimes rust covers the marks. Chalk can be applied after sandpaper or steel wool is rubbed on the rust. Then put a line of chalk on the proper timing mark. Some people can use a nail paint to permanently mark the correct timing degree.

Location for timing mark Mazda 323 1994 6cylinder

The timing marks are on the front harmonic balancer Locate the one cylinder if on firewall side then use number 4 front middle remove spark plug cut a coat hanger and slide down spark plug hole DO NOT START ENGINE rotate crankshaft with socket wrench watching coat hanger until it can not go any higher and not bending by getting stuck against cylinder wall. This will be TDC now you can see if reference mark on crank pulley aligns with pointer mark with fingernail polish so easily can be seen with timing light.

Looking for a manual for a snap on timing light MT-1261LA

Hi there:
This its a generic instructions about how to work...
1.- Locate the timing marks and the metal timing pointer located on the lower engine pulley. It might be necessary to turn the pulley with a wrench until the marks appear.
2.- Refer to the engine's specifications manual to determine what the correct timing mark is, and mark the proper timing mark on the pulley with a piece of chalk.
3.- Attach the timing light to the engine. The timing light has three cords that extend from the bottom of the light. Two of the cords have colored alligator clips on the end, while the third cord looks like a rectangle with a hole in the middle. Clip the red alligator clip to the positive side of the battery, which can be identified by the "+" sign. Clip the black alligator clip to a clean metal surface. The black clip acts as an electrical ground. Clip the cord that looks like a rectangle around the spark plug wire for the number one cylinder. Refer to the engine's manual to determine which wire is for the number one cylinder.
4.- Disconnect and plug any vacuum lines that are attached to the distributor. A vacuum line can be plugged with the tip of a pencil or golf tee.
5.- Ensure that the timing light's cords are free from the engine's fan, then start the engine.
6.- Point the timing light at the chalk mark on the lower engine pulley and the metal timing pointer, then pull the trigger on the timing light. The timing light will produce a strobe effect. The engine will be properly timed if the chalk mark and the metal timing pointer align with each other.
7.- Adjust the timing, if necessary, by loosening the single bolt that holds the distributor in place and twisting the distributor slightly until the chalk mark and the metal timing pointer are in alignment, then tighten the distributor's bolt and reconnect the distributor's vacuum line.

Crankshaft, camshaft, and distributor timing marks-2300 cc engine (© Ford Motor Co.)

On 2000 cc engines, turn the crankshaft until the two round locating holes in the camshaft pulley are visible from the rear side of the pulley, looking forward from the left-side of the car. When these two holes are parallel to the ground, the timing pointer on the crankshaft pulley should point to TDC. If the drive belt is dislocated, the crankshaft damper will be retarded or advanced 19° per cog on the belt.

If the engine you are working on does not have the two locating holes on the rear side of the camshaft pulley, then you will have to remove the drive belt cover and observe that when the crankshaft timing marks are aligned to TDC of the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder, the distributor rotor is pointing to the index mark on the upper lip of the distributor housing which coincides with No. 1 spark plug tower, and the pointer on the camshaft pulley is aligned with the index mark on the cylinder head.

On 2300 cc engines, there is an access plug provided in the cam drive belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removing the drive belt cover. Remove the access plug, turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the crankshaft damper indicates TDC, and observe that the timing mark on the camshaft drive sprocket is aligned with the pointer on the inner belt cover. Also, the rotor of the distributor must align with the No. 1 cylinder firing position.

CAUTION:

After any procedure requiring removal of the rocker arms on the 2300, each lash adjuster must be fully collapsed after assembly, then released. This must be done before the camshaft is turned.

Try plugging the vacuum advance hose itself to test the timing. Is the white Mark located where it should be? The Yellow is your advanced timing mark and should be also also be aligned with the pointer.
