Sorry to tell you this but it sounds like a serious problem that requires removal and repair at a transmission shop.

Check the trans fluid level and condition if the level is good you will need to consult a transmission shop

Check your Transmission fluid level. Look on your dip stick and read if it tells you to check it in Park gear or Neutral while idling.

The GMC I had you stopped, put the gear selector in Neutral, selected 4x4, put the gear selector in reverse and backed up a little then moved it to drive. Same procedure to go back to 2 wheel drive.

Truck dosent want to reverse

nothing you can really do for this outside of having the tranny rebuilt. Everything that controls reverse is on the inside of the transmission. You can try a flush and fluid, but i do not feel it would be helpful at this point.

Won't back up!

well slipping in reverse would be tranny...;but by saying the engine spits,,,sputters ,,,stalls,,,,sounds like engine not enough power to drive it in reverse...i'm guessing forward no problems...first thing comes to mind is in reverse engine moves on motor mounts as you give it gas..could be wiring harness rubbing on block causing short condition..when in forward engine moves opisite direction...while idling in park, shake wiring harness all over different spots see if you can simulate the condition.....are there any engine codes....also does it have a problem in reverse on a flat surface... or only on a incline....if only on an incline check fuel pressure while in reverse on incline.. see if loosing pressure for some reason..on incline fuel goes to lowest part of tank...

Reversing light dosent always work

Hi ddsnail123,
What you could be dealing with here, is a bad earth connection, or just as likely, a sticking or defective reverse lamp switch ( you'll find that on the gear box. If it's a manual it will have two cables and if it's an auto, it will be on the main gear selector switch)....The other alternative is, that the lamp holders or the connectors may be corroded inside and require cleaning or replacement....
