Car will not start


If the the car cranks and won't start it could be many things. Fuel pump is likely. If the timing belt is broken you would hear sounds from inside the engine you really don't want to hear. If you have more than 60K miles on a timing belt, it's good you replace it anyway and do the water pump, oil seal, and tension pulleys at the same time to save yourself some money.

have your water pump check with a flow test. my taurus did the same thing and the water pump blades had corroted away, so i have very little water flow.

How can i test weather the water pump is bad in my 2002 Dodge stratus. It over heated on my wife, i put water back in and ran it for awhile. the cooling fans kicked in and there was heat. do you have an...


If the pump isn't leaking and you can see water flowing in the radiator with the cap off, the pump is probably OK. Can you figure out where the coolant leaked out?

What must be removed to replace the water pump on a 1998 bmw 528i?


Not much really. I did my son's on the road in 20 degree weather. Remove the fan nut 1.250" wrench...left handed thread with the special tool. Remove fan, and shroud at the same time. Remove belly pan so you can drain the radiator. 16mm socket and 1/2 socket wrench to move the idler pulley tensioner. You move it not remove it. You move it enough to release serpentine tension. Remove belt. and 4 bolts holding the water pump pulley. Now the water pump is exposed. remove the bolts or nuts holding it in. go get some 6mm x 30mm hex bolts and use them to pry out evenly the water pump. That's it. reassemble, don't forget the o-ring.

My 99 cavalier is overheating i have changed head, gasket, radiator, fan, and have no thermostat, is it absolutely necessary to have one in the system


During the summer, you can run without a thermostat without any significant problems. In cold weather however, having no thermostat will prevent your car from warming up to normal operating temperature in a reasonable period of time, which will put additional stress on the engine and reduce your gas mileage substantially. You will also get virtually no heat to the passenger compartment. Two things you should check in regards to overheating: Is your water pump working and does your radiator fan switch on when the temperature rises above @190 degrees? If the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it, you might as well replace the pump now. Don't use a rebuilt pump. They are ****. Get a new pump and a good quality thermostat. If the fan doesn't come on when it should, you probably need an new fan switch/sensor. These are inexpensive and easy to replace. Also check for signs of damage to the wiring leading to this sensor, and check the fan fuse and relay. Finally, make sure that your antifreeze mix is no more than 70% antifreeze to water for winter weather, or 70% water to antifreeze in summer. 50/50 is a good bet for year-round reliability, but a higher % water will tend to cool the engine more efficiently. Having said all that, I suspect your water pump is the main problem. If you notice a slow drip of coolant near the pump, you can be almost certain it has failed.

it sounds like the radiator is starting to get pluuged, i would pull it out and have it checked & cleaned, its an inexpensive place to start.

Fuel pump not running only in cold weather


Pumping the pedal on an injected engine does nothing, except varying the air intake amount. I would change the fuel filter (if badly plugged, it may be causing the pump to shut off early) and clean the idle air control valve.(which should regulate idle air flow, eliminating the need for playing with the pedal) The valve itself is not difficult to service, but is a bit delicate. It can be cleaned with carb cleaner. just make sure you do not turn the valve end around while cleaning, and re-install it perfectly straight. You may have a bad drain back valve in the pump, but this is less common than what I outlined above.(there are tests for this)
