Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
It isnt the brakes, i can shift into reverse and move about three inches then the car wont move any farther and it wont move at all in first. tried pulling it out of the yard in neutral and tires still wont rotate, is it the shift linkage transmission or differential?

The most likely problem is a faulty master cylinder or if your ABS light came on, a wheel speed sensor problem . Did you do any work on the brakes recenntly? if so check front sensors. If brakes are old the caliper pins could be worn and binding....this really should be checked by a pro with VAG Com scan tool.

if your trans engages properly in fowards and not into reverarse then you have a worn clutch in the trans and the trans will need to be rebuilt

I had a car do this once and the problem was simple, the gear shift rod had loosened and shifted position. Check the rod at the transmission and on the shifter.

is this going from park?? if so, it could be the module inside the cover where the shifter is...this is the piece that tells the shifter when the brake is pressed and allows it to shift.... check that out and let me know if u have anything else....
