Saturn ion 2004 just replaced battery and alternator. now getting a power surge and lights going bright and dim. rpm also surges. any ideas

I believe the filter is actually a part of the fuel pump module. You have to replace the whole thing. You can contact Saturn parts to verify this.

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. Sitting at a light, went to accellerate and would barely move. The same lights came on for me too. I had it towed to the Saturn dealership and they tell me it's the computer control for the transmission. It's going to cost me in excess of $950.00 to replace. I did a little research and apparently this is an ogoing problem with 2003 Vues.

my car was stollen and used in a robbery and high speed chase.the strip was used to flatten the front tires and he still ran 1mile and a half on them flat.but my insurence payed to get it fixed after my 500.00 deduct.when i got it back i have damage to the front finder they didnt fix.and after i traveld 500 miles to come back home i have a bad noise in front when i had the oil changed i had him check it and he said something had gotten into the brake shoe pasanger side and chued it up now im afaried to drive it and dont have the money now to fix it is this maybe from all that went on with it he ran across a yard and colbert i was told that its hard to get stones in the brakes to do that kind of damege.should i go back to insurance co.i had asked them to make sure they checked out good now im in another state

While driving veh lost power, as if not getting fuel. RPM would not go up to 2000. Could only go 10-15 mph. Did not stall. that could not be diagnosed.

the voltage to electronics is critical and any loss of generated power from the alternator will result in under voltage to the ECM
that in turn throws out the set parameters of the sensors and so the ECM goes into reduced power mode
the surging could be an intermittent fault in with the alternator , failing cells in battery or loose or failing drive belt
before you spend money on new alternator and battery, you can have the battery load tested and the alternator bench tested as the fix can be reasonably simple

Reduce Engine light on; battery light on; low charge from charging system; vehicle won't run faster than 30 mph

You may have damaged the ECM with a power surge from shorting out the alternator. Try to reset the CPU program using a code reader and look for fault codes while you are at it

Could be your alternator is getting too weak to keep up with demand of the car's electricals. Have your alternator tested, or have a shop check your charging system. Either one will test the alternator. Know anyone with a voltmeter and how to use it?

When I am sitting at an idle, my lights flicker and I get power surges. Sometimes alternator doesn't charge. By racing the engine, it usually goes back to charging. I found a blown fuse for the OBD2 plug....

It sounds like you're idle speed is too slow, it should be in the 600 RPM neighborhood. The first thing to do is clean the throttle body and throttle plate.

My 2004 Ion has an engine surge when I stop and idle. RPM's shoot up then it almost dies. Also the power windows and locks will not work except the passenger side will go up and down. I replaced the switch...

Take the car to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for fault codes. Most parts stores will do the scan for free. Getting the codes should narrow down the cause of the problem with the engine surge. I would suspect a faulty throttle position sensor, but getting the codes should help narrow down the cause.

Are you using a gel based battery?
Sounds like an overload on the charging system screwing the whole electronics of the car.
If not - get it diagnosed at a dealership.

Voltage surges on 2003 Bonneville

The alternator requires a minimum rpm to produce sufficient current to power everything, When you take your foot off the gas pedal, the engine rpm drops below the minimum required to produce current. This is common in most cars, and not a problem.

If your battery is more than 3 years old, think about replacement within the year
