Question about 2006 Dodge Charger
The shifter has gone bad and you need to get it to the dealer for a replacement. If the shifter get's stuck in park and you can not do what your are doing to get it in to gear, here is a way for you to get it in to gear just so you don't have to tow it to the dealer for repairs. Refer to your manual for the break release for towing the car. There is a little red/pink leaver that has to pushed toward the shifter that can be accessed after you remove the chrome trim and coin cup to the right of the shifter on the console.
Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help if you need more information to the break shifter realest.
