The security system is causing this. First I'd spray the inside of your ignition switch with a little WD-40 or a little Liquid Wrench. Insert your key and pull it back out several times and wipe it off. Repeat this last step three times.

If that doesn't help, try leaving the driver's door open and switch the ignition key to the On (not start) position and right back to off three times and on the third switch to the On position, note if the General Electronics Module (GEM) chime. Take the key out and push a button on the remote such as Unlock.

Try your key again to see if it is recognized by the security system now.

Let the key in the On position on that third cycle of On and Off.

Why my car will crank but wont start?

A crank no start concern is when your car has power to it, and when you try to start the car it will turn over but will not fire. There are two problems that are mostly associated with a crank no start concern. Starter is Bad.
If your starter has failed, you might get a crank no start concern. If you happen to be stranded somewhere, I would try to tap on the starter. This is an old trick used by those in the know, and sometimes it will work so you can get your vehicle to a repair facility. The reason for this is because when a starter fails, it usually binds up internally. Tapping on the starter will sometimes free the internal parts temporarily and allow you to crank and start the vehicle. If this doesn't work, you may have lost power to the starter and will have to have the vehicle towed.
Fuel Pump Failure.
Another common problem for a crank no start concern is a bad fuel pump. A fuel pump does exactly what it says, it pumps the fuel from the gas tank through the lines and to the motor. If your fuel pump is bad your car may just crank and crank, but won't start. Ironically a quick fix for this is the same as the starter. Try to tap on the fuel tank to get the car started. This may allow the vehicle to run on what's called false fuel for a while, or at least until you can get it to the repair facility. If this method fails, unfortunately it's time to get the vehicle towed.
Electrical Issues
These days most vehicles will have some form of security system in place. The most simple form of security often causes a lot of problems. If your electronic ignition switch has a security feature on it, it can fail and cause the vehicle not to start. Basically what happens, is the car thinks the wrong key is in the ignition and refuses to allow the vehicle to start. Really the only repair for something like this is to replace the entire ignition switch for faulty operation.

What causes my 1998 Jaguar XK8 not to start when initially cranked and the Fail Safe message is displayed?

Is the check engine light displayed? If it is, that's where you start, by retrieving the fault code(s). If not, then you could have a security system fault, fuel system breakdown, etc. All codes, regardless of the systems affected, will cause the vehicle computer to immediately default to a failsafe mode, till the problem has been fixed, and this drastically affects driveability, causing no-start issues, idle problems, etc.

Truck cranks when cold for a second

I'm assuming the engine cranks over with the starter, seems to start for a second or two then dies.

Does the message centre have a flashing "SECURITY" message?

If so, you have a Passlock II problem.

To get it running you'll have to do the 10 minute relearn procedure, or if that fails the 30 minute relearn procedure. I could post both procedures if you like.

To fix it so it will never fail again you will have to:
1) bypass the sensor in the steering column, or ,
2) hardwire (solder) the 3 wires to the sensor, or ,
3) replace the sensor.
This last option rarely works due to the problem being in the connector contacts, therefore my preferred method is either option 1 or 2. (I really wish GM would fix the contact issue by using gold flashed contacts and not crummy tin plated ones which tarnish over time)

1992 Buick lasbre. Bypassed security module . Turn ignition switch to run waited 15 minutes and car still wouldn't run and security light still on.

why not stated the symptoms.
cranks ok, or not. Dead starter?
wont start at all
or starts for 2 seconds but stalls, or ???????

IS this a STOCK security? system?
if your car has security engine cut out, that needs to be fixed
or in rare cases (bypass/modified/hacked)
on most cars only early systems are hackable. (ask why,)

there are many causes. but #1 is , does it crank ok.?
there are many ways for the security systems to fail (and friends)
the shifter PRNDL switch loves to fail. killing cranking, try cranking in neutral, bingo?
then there is the security system. and the funky keys they use.
if real serious, DIY, get the FSM , and see all the tests there for the
sec. modules.
or alldata.com

many old cars 92 the online documents are bad. poor
the FSM is not poor its dead accurte,
buyone, on ebay used, or near nothing.
on old cars, this IS THE BEST advice.....

Car won't start

Try closing your doors, then using the key (not the auto lock fob) lock the doors then using the key again, unlock the door. Try starting the car again, it should work. If not, have it towed to a dealership, they can fix the issue

The bravada died while driving. cranks over but will not start could it be a failed security system?

No.
The security system would also prevent the engine from cranking.
Have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure at the injector ?
