A bad transmission. Several things would cause this in a newer one. Yours is just old ad tired....rebuild or replace.

Change the trans solenoid pack inside the transmission pan

Lost 5th gear manual trans 96 ford probe


Unfortunately it sounds like a transmission rebuild. Manual transmission use syncronizers to allow the gears to mesh correctly when sifting. When it "pops" out of gear, it may have been a bent shift fork or a chipped gear, but now it sounds like it's sheared. You can remove the drain plug and see if the oil is contaminated with metal shavings to confirm.

Search online..but it sounds like the 'synchros' in the transmission are going/gone.
Also, the clutch may be wearing out.

My 92 Nissan NX2000 coupe won't go into gear, it pops out and now it just grinds...what could be wrong?


Its not fluid levels and it is not syncro's. Its a defective 5th gear. Sorry to say man but it's shot. This is not an easy fix or a cheap one (unless you are doing it yourself). Looking at $400 just in parts. I had this happen to me. I have done a ton of research and found comprehensive information that has educated me on this common problem in these transmissions. What has happened is the teeth on the 5th gear have worn down to a point that it will no longer allow it to catch and stay in gear. Anytime it is put under any kind of load it will just pop out. Why does this happen to countless Nissan NX and Sentra owners? Faulty engine and transmission mounts. So it is also recommended to replace all 4 mounts in your car when doing this fix. Here is a Web address that will take you to a forum that will describe the problem, what parts need to be replaced, where you can buy them and how to replace them if you chose to do that. You will save yourself about $600 in labor. If you don't choose to not do it yourself you will at least be able to give the mechanic a detailed description of what is going on and how to fix it. I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. I can shift into all gears fine but when I shift into 5th gear it sorta grinds. In shifts into reverse fine its just the 5th gear. I don't whats wrong, or how to fix it....


About all you can do at this point is change the oil in the gear box and have your shift linkage checked and adjusted. The grind is internal, and the transmission will need to be removed to be repaired. Most likely it's worn synchronizers.

If it grinds going into fourth then it would most likely be a synchronizer inside the transmission.
