Question about 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
My 2004 trailblazer #6 piston is losing compression - about 90 as opposed to others aqt 140-150. Dealer wants me to replace for about 4400 or get new engine - 7500. The vehicle dies at stops when air is running (especialy when hot) I know nothing about cars. They said the lower engine was fine - ran a wet compression test. It's got 83,000 miles on it and the tranny was already replaced 2 years ago. Am I being taken?
Get a second opinion from a independent shop that sounds way to high.

If you want to, you can change just that piston...or more likely that one set of rings (but will need to buy a set) It's not a routine repair but it can be done. The cylinder head needs to be removed, as does the oil pan. Even with the few special items you will need, the price is far below what the engine replacement will cost. Don't buy anything till its apart so you can have the head checked. I'd also look into a good used engine likely installed it's at least $1000 cheaper than the two prices you listed.
I would only buy one that has similar or less miles that sustained a rear or side impact. If the body is perfect that shows that the car likely had mechanical problems otherwise why scrap it? Is the dealer overpriced???Show me one that's not!!!
