Question about 1990 Nissan Maxima

Does the 1997 Nissan Maxima have a shift lock button? I've already tried putting it in neutral with only the battery on and that doesn't work (to get it unstuck from Park)

I don't have one of those.  I already looked. My daughter has one on her car like you described, but none on mine.  I literally searched every inch of my console and shift box looking for anything that might resemble a panel or a button.

I bought the car about 7 years ago from a Nissan dealership, so I guess it's possible they had done some work on the transmission. It's not in my paperwork (not that they would include that.) It's a GLE if that makes any difference. I guess I'm just going to call AAA and have it towed to my service station.  I just wanted to be able to drive it up there to save me the hassle.  Oh well!  Thanks for your help!

Hey voodoo, just wanted to let you know that i figured it out in case anyone else has this problem.  Underneath the plastic cover of the gear shift, there is a little lever connected to the shifter that releases it to be free to shift.  I had to click the release button on my shifter to see it moving, then took a long screw driver and pushed it up until it released the shifter to move out of park.  A little bit of a pain, but it will work until I can get it to the garage.  Thanks...........Annie

Hi Annie,

Its located close to where the shift is, it looks like akey hole you can use your key and push down in the hole then you willbe able to move shift. Good Luck

I see you found out how to get it out of park .It may not have power to the switch by the shifter it could be as simple as a bad break light fuse or brake light switch do you have brake lights if so then the switch by the shifter is the problem!

1997 Nissan Maxima brake and battery lights on

John, I think I may have already answered this one.Check and clean battery connections and all grounds(loosen and re tighten all ground connections to give good contact), check belt for being loose. Nissan forums say it is a bad alternator.

Generally, when a shift lock solenoid/system goes bad you just zip tie the shift lock to unlocked position and that removes the need to depress the brake to shift out of park.

How to program 1997 Maxima remote

Try this it works for the 95 and 96 models it should also work for all models 95 thru 99. 1st you need to get in the car and hit the lock button on the drivers door switch. Make sure doors and windows are all shut. To program the remote you must insert the key into the ignition 6 to 8 times rapidly in a 10 second time period and when you have done it correct the hazards lights will then illuminate twice. Next then you must hit the lock button quickly on the remote due to a slight time delay only hit the button once. Keep repeating this step until it works and to find out if it worked hold down the trunk button or the unlock button(the front windows should let down on you Mad-Max.

Remove the aftermarket alarm or if it's a OEM alarm try unhooking the battery cables for a few minutes to clear the computer.

Sounds as if you need the electrical portion of the ignition switch. The contacts inside are most likely worn out.

Make sure the battery on your Keyless Entry remote is a working battery.

If thats not it, it could very well be the actual button on your Keyless Entry remote being faulty. But it could also be a relay in the car aswell. Depending on the cost of a Relay versus the cost of a Keyless Entry remote, I would try to replace either/or and try again, whichever is cheaper. The Relay may be cheaper, but your Key-FOB sounds like it could be the cause.
