Hi My caddy idles fine but when I drive it wont rev over 4000 rpm , the van is a 1600 petrol version

Grant, it could be many things including a blocked fuel filter, failing fuel pump or faulty throttle position sensor/ blocked air filter.

The least inexpensive way of finding the fault - really - is to take it to a workshop and have your car put onto a diagnostic machine.

You could spend a lot of -unnecessary - money by changing/swapping things that make no difference. Workshop diagnostic machine..

Rough idle

if its petrol, its going to be the idle speed or stepper motor ,just also check the air flow meter ,make sure there is no rubbish in the mesh in there ,,there is also a tiny little skinny wire in there ,make sure its in one piece ,dont touch it with your hands just use lite compressed air to blow it clean

High fuel consumption

Hi There,

If you are wanting to lessen the high fuel consumption you must do the following.
1 - Over-Reving is a big no no. Keep the revs between 2 and 4 thousand rpm. (it is highly easy to over rev so lessen the throttle)
2 - You can buy a product called octane booster. The higher the octane in the fuel tank the better for your car. To use insert into fuel tank as you would a bowser nozzle and release amount of octane as per product intructions prior to filling up with petrol, then add petrol after. This ensures proper mixing of octane throughout tank.

Hope this helps

Cheers Buckaroo,
Chris.

The actuator only opens when maximun set boost has been achieved. the actuator lets exhaust gas bypass the turbo once it has reached its pressure. check for vacuum leaks, cracks in the intake piping.

Nissan skyline 1988 .Noticed a petrol smell in and around back of car. looked underneath and there is petrol leaking out of the top of the petrol tank. Any suggestions please

A lot of Nissan models have an inspection cover in the trunk that you can remove to get at the fuel pump in the gas tank. If not there, perhaps under rear seat, but should be in trunk. Locate it, remove it and have a look for possibility of broken or cracked piece of fuel line hose attached to pump, or look around for other source of your leak. Careful with trouble light near fumes!! Use a good flashlight if you can. Be sure to relieve system pressure before doing anything on fuel lines if that's the problem.

Possible intake air leak

Yep....one easy way is to have the van sitting there at idle and take a can of starting fluid spray....spray around the intake area. Use the little straw. Spray a little at a time. The motor will rev up when you have a area that sucks that spray in.
