2005 Touareg needing new oil cooler & camshaft

Got "insuffient coolant" error message at weekend, took it into local VW garage and advise oil in coolant, needs new oil cooler and camshaft. Car is not yet 4 yrs old, only 53,000 miles on clock, seems odd for such a major thing to fail so quickly. Any comments? Is this normal, bad luck or bad maintenance? Thanks for your help

Yes you could have a faulty oil cooler. But The oil in the coolent has nothing to do with the camshaft. There just trying to make a fast buck from you.Tell them just to change the oil cooler and nothing else.

This info is very helpful! I have the same issue with my 2005 Touareg, except it has 158,000 miles. Is it possible to only have the oil cooler seal replaced (it's $3 part) & have the coolant system flushed or is it necessary to replace the entire oil cooler?

Oil in the coolant is a head gasket or timing cover gasket failure. camshaft shouldnt have anything to do with it unless it was heat damaged from improper coolant level. does your exhaust smell like coolant or do you smell coolant inside the vehicle?

Losing coolant

take it to a radiator shop and have the system pressure tested
if the pressure remains static at pressure start the engine and see if the pressure drops
if it does indicates a water pump seal when running
check the drain hole under the pump housing for stains and water marks
something the garage should have done

Go above the dealer and file a complaint. Sounds like the lemon law could possibly help.

2005 touareg water in oil not head gasket; getting coollant error n=messages - fill it, only to get messages again about 4km later with coolant gone

water doesn't just evaporate it has to be leaking out somewhere, how do you know that the head gasket isn't blown ? it may be cracked or the engine block may be cracked or a seal is leaking, water doesn't disappear it has to be going somewhere, it might be a good idea to have the radiator pressure tested to find out just where the water is leaking from .....hope this helps.....cheers.

2004 vw touareg 2.5 tdi the oil sump was full of water and oil mix, also inlet manifold had oil and water mix.number 5 cylinder had locked up and engine would not turn,so i removed glow plugs and cranked...

Can not be water pump, because that has a vent hole to the outside, and does not at all allow access to crankcase or cylinders. Oil cooler is also unlikely because oil is under more pressure than the water, and it would not get into the cylinder.
Water in the cylinder means up high.
That means head gasket or cracked head.
You can tell with a leak down test.
You borrow the gauge from a place like Autozone, and replace the water reservoir cap with it. Over pump it, about 30 psi. And watch for leaks. If same cylinder keeps filling, then you know where the bad gasket or head crack is. Diesels often crack heads. Not hard to do, but new head is not cheap. Probably $500 for part, $400 labor.

Temperature light came on 2002 VW Passat wagon backing out of garage today, slight burning smell. Returned after 2 miles. Have experienced this smell on and off since oil & filter change several weeks...

You can see the coolant level by looking through the opaque round coolant reservoir. It should be just over the middle. There's a line indication proper level. Orange Dexcool meets the VW specification and is generally available. The rear coolant flange can warp and seep over time and leaks onto hot parts. That's probably why you smell it.

Oil in water resovour vw 2002 passat

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
If the oil cooloer fails internely you will have a mix of coolant and oil. In the engine and in the Radiator,

But not to say the other guys were wrong...

I had the same problem with my T5 130. My mechanic replaced the head gasket to no avail, then we checked the oil filter, that was ok.then we went on to a web forum and found out that the AXD engine suffers from water pump failure. We took it off and it was corroded, the seal had failed and was pumping water into the block. My advice,CHECK WATER PUMP FIRST! Good luck Marc,Somerset.
