2005 Touareg needing new oil cooler & camshaft

Got "insuffient coolant" error message at weekend, took it into local VW garage and advise oil in coolant, needs new oil cooler and camshaft. Car is not yet 4 yrs old, only 53,000 miles on clock, seems odd for such a major thing to fail so quickly. Any comments? Is this normal, bad luck or bad maintenance? Thanks for your help

Yes you could have a faulty oil cooler. But The oil in the coolent has nothing to do with the camshaft. There just trying to make a fast buck from you.Tell them just to change the oil cooler and nothing else.

This info is very helpful! I have the same issue with my 2005 Touareg, except it has 158,000 miles. Is it possible to only have the oil cooler seal replaced (it's $3 part) & have the coolant system flushed or is it necessary to replace the entire oil cooler?

Oil in the coolant is a head gasket or timing cover gasket failure. camshaft shouldnt have anything to do with it unless it was heat damaged from improper coolant level. does your exhaust smell like coolant or do you smell coolant inside the vehicle?

Go above the dealer and file a complaint. Sounds like the lemon law could possibly help.

Transmission oil found in radiator

there is a cooler for the trans fluid that runs threw the f the radiator the cooler splits and trans pressure being higher while running pushes into the coolant how ever as it cools down the coolant pressure can push the coolant into the trans so see if the trans fluid looks like a straw beery milk shake if so try and keep flushing the trans until the fluid is clean and fresh if the trans makes it threw the coolant then you will need to flush the cooling system i use pinesol it breaks down the oil

Engine ceased VW 2004 passat 4cyl. 59k, multiply oil changes from local garage, VW too expensive engine ceased. called VW they want to change me to see the car. What shoud lI do?

Let them see the car.

Did you check to see if the vehicle actually had oil in it? Sometimes small shops forget to put oil in or forget to put the oil plug back on.

It may be less expensive to go to your local corner garage at first, but now look at what it is going to cost you.

You may be able to find this engine in the scrap or junkyard. Look for a car that has rear end damage. This indicates that the engine is still good and none of the seals have been shifted because of the damage. Front end damage may cause seals to shift and have an oil leak

Oil in water resovour vw 2002 passat

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
If the oil cooloer fails internely you will have a mix of coolant and oil. In the engine and in the Radiator,

But not to say the other guys were wrong...

I had the same problem with my T5 130. My mechanic replaced the head gasket to no avail, then we checked the oil filter, that was ok.then we went on to a web forum and found out that the AXD engine suffers from water pump failure. We took it off and it was corroded, the seal had failed and was pumping water into the block. My advice,CHECK WATER PUMP FIRST! Good luck Marc,Somerset.

I have had exactly the same thing happen to me. In the end it was a faulty water pump which was allowing water into the engine.

Antifreeze in transmission,

You could possibly have a internal crack in the radiator, this is not un herd of because the transmission cooler is the side tank of the radiator, they are separated by a internal metal divider and its possible for the radiator to crack forcing antifreeze into the transmission cooler section of the radiator, because of the timing of this incident i would not stray from human error as a major possibility, but its not impossible for this to happen on its own and i have seen it before, its also possible they did not change the fluid in the flush machine from a previous job (that had water in the fluid) i would recheck the tranny fluid now and make sure its not watered down and overfilled, also be sure your coolant is not low, if these check out, then your shop owes you a brand new transmission and thats great because they aren't the best ones on the market and have a high failure rate anyway, best of luck to you and please rate this solution -Jeff
