When driving the front wheel makes a noise like no grease when you slow down or stop it will go away

and common, prob.
it can be just the wear markets on the front pads yelling at you
"change me" soon for i die.
or the 4wd axle ends lockers are rusty and clicking. (common)

and drive, to prove they are good or bad. (easy huh)?

i1m sorry to say that wheel bearings are not set to a torque specification, when you have repacked the bearings [ inner and outer ] ,reassembled it ,take the nut up until thewheel starts to drag and not turn very far when you try to spin it spin it backward and forward several times,grab the top of the wheel and try to push it in and out,if you getany movement at all tighten the nut a couple of castilations. do it all over again, spinthe wheel a few times and then try for the crossways movement again, if there is no movement ,you are very close to being right....................now comes the experience bit , iwould take it one more castilation of the nut because i know the feel that is need ed,,without that i suggest you put the pin in where you ereput the cap on and go for a 5 minute drive . whenyou get back ,jack it up and thespinning of the wheel again and try for the top crossways movement ,if there is any tighten thenut 2 castilations, and provided that when you try to spin the wheel by hand with a reasonably strong push the wheel should trael about 6 inches at least after your hand leaves it ,it is now a close as you are going to get itput it all to gether and for the next day or so put yor hand on the grease cap after you have driven anydistance, and you will feel it is warm but you should be able tohold your hand on the grease cap. there you have it ,any questions come back."youdoit"

first you remove the wheel then the break caliper then remove the locking hubs just remember to lay out the parts in order a special tool is called for but this job can be done without it you have to use a small cold chisel and a hammer to tap the large nut counter clockwise to remove, you can then remove the outer bearing and the rotor and hub assembly look on the back side reomve the bearing seal and inner bearing be sure to pack your new bearings with grease before you reassemble . takes less than an hour.

SOURCE: How do I replace the

  1. Loosen all of the front/rear wheel lug nuts 1 / 2 turn.
  2. Apply the parking brake, block the rear wheels, then raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheels.
    1. If equipped with 4WD and automatic locking hubs, perform the following:
    1. Unscrew the automatic hub cover and remove the cover and O-ring.
    2. Remove the hub assembly mounting bolts and remove the hub assembly.

    1. If equipped with 4WD and manual locking hubs, perform the following:
    1. Remove the six manual hub cover mounting bolts and remove he manual hub cover and gasket.
    2. Remove the six manual hub mounting bolts.
    3. Remove the manual hub and O-ring.

    1. Remove the caliper mounting bracket and position the caliper out of the way. Support the caliper.
    2. Remove the brake rotor from the wheel hub. Remove the front wheel bearing lockplate screws, lockplate and washer.
    3. Remove the wheel bearing locknut and washer, then remove the wheel hub complete with bearings and seals.

    If wheel hub cannot be removed by hand, use special tool J3781 with a J2619-01 for the Tracker or 0999-1511 with 09930-30102 for the Sidekick, Sidekick Sport and X-90 models, or their equivalents. These tools are a hub remover and sliding hammer.

    1. If equipped with ABS brakes, remove the sensor rotor from the wheel hub.

    Pull out the sensor rotor from the wheel hub gradually and evenly. Pulling it out partially may cause it to deform.

    1. Remove the inner bearing grease seal.

    1. Remove the snapring and remove the inner bearing.
    2. Clean and inspect the hub and bearing seats.

    To install:

    1. Install the inner race, wheel bearing snapring and seal in the hub. Apply lithium grease to the lip portion of the oil seal.

    1. If equipped with ABS brakes, install the sensor rotor.
    2. Install the hub on the spindle and install the outer bearing, locknut, washer, and lockplate. Tighten the locknut to 123-180 ft. lbs. (170-216 Nm).

    1. Install the four lockplate mounting screws. Tighten the screws to 8.8-17.7 inch lbs. (1-2 Nm).
    2. Install the brake rotor.
    3. Install the caliper and tighten the bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
    4. If equipped with 2WD, install the locking hub cap.
    1. If equipped with 4WD and automatic locking hubs, perform the following:
    1. Install a new O-ring on the hub assembly.
    2. Install the hub assembly onto the wheel flange. Make sure the tab on the hub fits into the notch on the spindle.
    3. Install the six mounting bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4. Install a new O-ring on the hub cover.
    5. Install the hub cover.

    1. If equipped with 4WD and manual locking hubs, complete the following sub-steps:
      1. Install a new O-ring on the manual hub body.
      2. Install the manual hub onto the wheel flange and install the six mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      3. Install a new gasket on the manual hub cover.
      4. Install the hub cover on the hub. The lever must be in the FREE position with the clutch pulled out toward the cover.
      5. Install the six mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

      6. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.

    A noise in neutral that goes when the clutch is disengaged indicates a front input shaft bearing in the gear box . When the clutch is out that shaft is spinning along with the cluster shaft in the gear box. When the clutch is in that shaft stops (to engage first gear) and the bearing is no longer working.. It normally means a box out job.

    Heat coming from1997 geo tracker & front tires


    sounds like you have a brake claiper piston not return causing the brake pads to drag, jack up both wheels and spin to see if you can feel or hear drag, give the wheel a hard spin and see if it stops right away or seems to spin freely, could be the drag of the pads on the rotor, or wheel bearings need repack or even as much as brake residual fluid pressure on calipers cuased by improper brake mc pushrod adjustment, if you have had any recent brake work like a MC replacement it could be that it was not properly adjusted as far as pedal free play... check those.. please let me know if this helps, rate my help...thanks

    Cannot find tool to loosen front wheel bearing lock nut


    I have a 1995 Geo Tracker 4WD with the same exact problem,However I did some research . You will need to go to the Kent Moore Website which makes specialty tools and look up Wheel bearing socket "J-37763" I saw the picture of it and it looks like there are 4 small rounded teeth/tabs. Unfortunately get ready to spend some money - cost is about $70.00 not including shipping/handling

    Four wheel drive will not work on 1995 geo tracker


    You need to take the cover off your hub and clean and grease the lock ring. It is attached to the spring. It sounds as though your hub is rusted open.

    Humming noise


    the noise is most likely your roof rack if you have one. my tracker does the same thing (2000) and i think its the roof rack. im used to it now anddont mind the extra outside noise as it works well along with my Deer Alert wistles to help avoid deer hits.
