Question about 1995 Mercury Villager

I need to change the A/c Hose that is linked with the bottle (Lower pressure). The hose is leaking but so slow. I have to change or can I seal the leak with some sealer or special glue? If I have to change it, Could someone give me some tips or steps That I need follw in order to change it?.

There is a sealer you can try,but the best bet is to replace it,you have to have the system evacuated then you can replace the hose,right after you remove the hose put some duct tape accross the fitting untill you install the new 1 so nothing can get inside the system, then recharge,check for leaks

Where is the thermstat at in a 1998 ford taurus?


I'm guessing you can't find it because it's in a separate housing or located under the lower battery tray in the housing (depending on model of engine). Even though this is specific for 1998; I believe it's the same for 1996-1999 Taurus's. I have access to illustrations, but only .gif and/or .bmp extensions were available which would not copy here. If you need these, I will try an extension change to .jpg. Good luck, this should be enough info. It is helpful to include the engine size in question, for future reference...

3.0L (2V) Engine

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575) as described.
2.Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water hose connection (8592) .
3.Remove the three water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water hose connection .
4.Remove the gasket and water thermostat from the water hose connection . Do not reuse gasket.
Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , gasket and water hose connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-124 lb-in).
3.Connect the upper radiator hose to the water hose connection .
4.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water, as described under Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding procedure.
5.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
6.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
2.Raise vehicle on hoist.
3.Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) from the water inlet connection.
4.Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
5.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
6.If required, remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from lower radiator hose tube. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-ring, water thermostat housing (if removed) as shown.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
4.Lower vehicle.
5.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

Removal

4.Remove battery tray.
5.Disconnect upper radiator hose and position out of the way.
6.Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection (8K528) .
7.Remove the two retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection .
8.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water pump (8501) . Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Thermostat

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-rings and water inlet connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection .
4.Install upper radiator hose . Position spring clamp securely.
5.Install battery tray.
6.Install power distribution box.
7.Install battery.
8.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
9.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
10.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

4.6L Engine - replacing thermostat



CAUTION Never remove the radiator cap under any conditions while the engine is running, or while hot. Failure to heed this caution could result in cooling system damage or severe personal injury.
  1. Drain the engine cooling system until the coolant level is below the thermostat.
  2. Detach the lower radiator hose, the return hose and the degas bottle hose from the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the two mounting bolts, then remove the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the O-ring and thermostat from the housing. Discard the O-ring.

To install:

NOTE To prevent installing the thermostat with an incorrect orientation, the housing contains a positioning slot. Install the thermostat so that the bridge part protrudes into the housing, not into the intake manifold.
  1. Position the thermostat and a new O-ring on the housing, then install the housing.
  2. Install the two mounting bolts, and alternately tighten them to:
    1. 4.6L SOHC engines 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
    2. 4.6L DOHC engines 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  3. Connect the lower radiator hose, the return hose and the degas bottle hose to the housing.
  4. Fill the cooling system, then start the engine and check for leaks.
  5. If necessary, top off the cooling system overflow reservoir.

  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  3. Remove the 2 thermostat housing bolts and separate the lower and upper thermostat housings.
    1. Discard the thermostat O-ring seal and remove the thermostat.


To install:

NOTE Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine coolant.
  1. Install a new thermostat with the smaller plate facing upward and the O-ring seal.
  2. Position the lower and upper thermostat housings together and install the 2 bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  4. Fill and bleed the cooling system.

How do you replace a thermostat


WARNING: SCALDING HOT COOLANT, WATER OR STEAM
NEVER remove the pressure relief cap under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instruction could result in DAMAGE to the
cooling system or engine AND/OR personal injury. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the cooling system or reservoir, use extreme care when removing the pressure relief cap from a hot cooling system or reservoir.
  1. Wait until the engine has cooled.
  2. Wrap a thick cloth around the pressure relief cap and turn it slowly (until the pressure begins to release.
  3. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system.
  4. When you are certain all the pressure has been released, (still with a cloth) turn and remove pressure relief cap .
REMOVAL

  1. Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575).
  2. Raise vehicle on hoist. See General Information.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) and degas bottle hose from the water inlet connection.
  4. Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
  5. Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
  6. If required, remove water bypass hose from water thermostat housing and remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from oil filter adapter (6881). Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
INSTALLATION
  1. Install the water thermostat, O-rings, water thermostat housing (if removed) and water inlet connection as illustrated.
  2. Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
  3. If removed, connect the water bypass hose to the water thermostat housing.
  4. Connect the lower radiator hose and degas bottle hose to the water inlet connection.
  5. Lower vehicle.
  6. Fill the coolant with Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or-B (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8-B) or equivalent that meets Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A in a 50/50 mixture with water.
  7. Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
  8. Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

Leaking coolant but not overheating


Can you identify WHERE it is leaking from? Is it just a slight dribble and a bit of steam, of a major leak where it is running out?
If it is from the rubber hoses or near the clamps? Your vehicle is quite old and the upper/lower radiator hoses may have to be replaced. A fairly simple loosening of hose clamps with a screwdriver or with a pair of pliers and then just levering them off their housings.
But first get a large sheet of cardboard or plastic and a shallow pan to catch the coolant as you let it drain. Let the engine cool first... test if the internal pressure has gone down by squeezing on the upper radiator hose... if it is easy to squeeze then it is safe to drain and empty the radiator with the little winged tap that is just on the lower, inside of the radiator. Loosen the radiator cap to allow air to enter the system and let the coolant flow out. (Careful with pets... they seem to love drinking the coolant... but it is poison!)
You can now change the upper/lower rad hoses and heater hoses and maybe a short by-pass hose.
IF the leak is just a minor seepage from the radiator or inside the heat core (you likely can smell the vapours of the steam of the leaking coolant inside, the likely cure is to my some "radiator stop leak" from an auto supply store. Follow the directions on the bottle, but most have a syrupy liquid and little metal pellets. You open the radiator cap (when it is cool or depressurized) then add the small bottle of radiator repair solution. Put the rad cap back on and then you have to go for a reasonably long drive (usually 30 minutes or so) to heat up the pellets and have them "melt" as little flecks of soft metal in the solution. The idea is that as the coolant attempts to leak out... these little metal flecks block the leak.
IF you have the coolant totally dumping out and it is not a leaking hose, it may be the water pump and seal. I think I'd suggest that you get a mechanic to deal with that.... it is not an easy task for a DIYer !

The power steering resoivoir drains out after 1-2 hours


Hi:

Check to see if you have a Power Steering hose leak ,Open Hood and Have someone inside turing Steering wheel back and Forth slow.While you have a Light and Locate your Leak.

Power Steering System is a Sealed System, Sounds like you have a Hole in 1-of your Power Steering Fluid Lines(Pressure) More that likely. or Return line.

If its leaking at the Pump where your hoses go in it might just be a Rubber Seal. But the most common problem is a Hose is Busted Open.

Leaking radiator fluid where lower hose connects w/core


Hi:

If you have a leak near the lower radiator connection that just started, it is either a failed hose, or possibly a radiator core leak that is dripping down to that area.
If you havent changed your radiator hoses for awhile, and they feel soft, it isn't a bad idea to change them both. If you drain your radiator to change the hoses, this would be a good time to inspect the radiator, and perhaps you will find the source of the leak.

I have a slow coolant leak, can't find it anywhere. My lower radiator hose has coolant on the outer hose, but dosen't look like it is leaking from there ?


You need to pressure test it that will show any leaks..If you know someone with a pressure tester or check at our local parts store for a loaner tool ....the tool for a basic one is around $30 and up so good luck hope this helps

I keep having to refill my coolant tank what do i need to do


There is a small hole under the extension behind where the pulley is mounted, most times barely visible. If you see any coolant there the pump seal is leaking. Many times it will show up better with the cap off, as internal pressure can sometimes push the seal against the shaft and temporarily stop the leak. If any coolant is found there,(sometimes it will run down the lower hose and appear like a bad hose or clamp) the pump needs to be changed. No, it is in no way related to a manifold gasket leak.
