Since there are no carburetor the fuel injection nozzles have holes which are about the size of a human hair, its imperative that these nozzles are cleaned properly and that can be done by a trained technician of any service center.............sodeep

Sounds like it's you spark plug leads. Depending which engine you have in there, if you have the 2.4L then it is a module.

SOURCE: 98 chevy cavalier turns over but won't start

i know industry jargon can be confusing, but lets try this. if it turns over but won't start, it could be your ''ignition module'' that sits on top of the vave cover on the motor or it might be the fuel pump or filter. make sure when you crank the engine that the key is all the way turned or it may not always make a proper contact to activate the ignition module. iv'e seen this before & had to change the ignition switch & all worked ok after that. i would need to know engine lt size to give you more details on the matter. please get back to me.

SOURCE: My 2004 chevy cavalier won't start it is stuck in

I agree that it is the linkage cable. I had a similar problem with my '03. Mine would start but you could not put it in gear, the (center-console mounted) gear selector moved freely. I forget what I paid for labor but the part is like $55 (as of july 2011)

I would need to know the actual code numbers to comment, but in general those components would not keep the engine from starting.

My 97 chevy cavalier is running to lean on the motor. What could that be?

I would start with the fuel filter if this is OK and you really think is still lean you would be looking towards O2 sensors but a mechanical diagnostic would help pinpoint.

97 cavalier key won't turn

My daughter was told the same thing when her key wouldn't turn and was getting stuck in her 97 chevy cavalier. The used-car dealer suggested going to a Chevy dealer and getting a master key remade, not a copy of the key. We did for $16 and the new master key did the trick! It's as smooth using the key as in a new car. Try that first before any of the worst-case scenarios...
