Make sure the oil level is good. The hydraulic tensioners for the chain work with the engine's oil. If low it will make a rattling/knocking like noise.

Thanks Hector, Yes it help a lot, I changed the oil, filter and up to level, I think that is time to start saving some money to change the chains in there, what you suggest To change all four or just the rear crankcase? the labor will be the same to one or all four doesn't it? really appreciated in advance

  • ferros33 May 06, 2014

My thanks and appreciation to all in advance. it's great!! to have a chnnel and helping people.

  • Hector L. Morales May 06, 2014

If in fact it needs the chains, since it's already open, why risk having to do the rest at a later time and pay for the labor all over again? Now if the rattle is due to lack of oil I would try to address any leaks or oil consumption issues you may have first.

I just had my tensioner chains replaced in my 02 explorer. An AWD one. Yeah ... let it go a little too long like 2 days and ended up breaking all 4 chains (yeah some have 2 some 3 and some 4) so ended up with an entire engine coming out all 4 chains replaced. Took weeks but total price was $2500 and my engine is great now with new hoses and repairs I didnt even know about. But not every mechanic knows how to do this and there is a special tool to seperate the engine from the transmission. Pick someone you trust that has ALOT of Ford experiance. I have a guy here in VA but dont let anyone tell you its trash. Once it gets loud and you get a warm feeling under the radio between the console, STOP driving it. Have it towed to a shop ASAP. Will save you mad money!

Glad you were able to get to the bottom of it.

SOURCE: Rear Axle Bearing

i know for a fact that the bearing comes with the hub., and if the old bearing is badly damage you may need to heat it to remove it from the axel...so this may be a rather big job if your not equipt

SOURCE: 2002 ford Ranger 3.0 v6 (auto) rear end noise when accelerating on curves.

Grab the bed of the truck and vigorously rock the vehicle from side to side. If you hear clunking in the axle, you probably need to check the carrier bearings in the differential. I had the carrier bearings, wheel bearings, and seals replaced in my mother-in-law's 1991 Ranger for $280, and it rides like a new truck. Well, ok, it rides like an 18 year old truck with a new rear end. I provided the wheel bearings and seals to the shop, and they provided the carrier bearing, lube, and labor. While the axles are out, check the surface where the axles ride on the bearings. If they are worn, there are undersized bearing available, but it is usually cheaper and easier to just by new axles.

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.

Suspect 99 malibu broken timing belt

If its a 99 4 cyl 2.4 ltr it should have a timing chain. Check your PCV (positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve. it should rattle when you shake it. sometimes you can clean it with carb cleaner. but for what they cost, just go buy a new one. When they plug up it doesn't let your crankcase breathe and you will start getting oil in your throttle body or carb. Gas engines don't like to run on oil for the combustion process.4 cyl engines dont have a pcv valve just the v6 motor...

Low compression cyl has 20 lbs of compression.

A leakdown test is where you remove the spark plug from the problematic cylinder, and install an adapter and air hose, shop air, about 90 to 120 psi.You have to be certain both valves are closed on that cylinder, and i do this by removing the valve cover on that bank, rotate the crankshaft and watch the rocker arms work on that cylinder, and watch them close completely. Now,install the shop air,and listen for air hissing in the tailpipe, this checks the exhaust valve, and then the intake manifold, this checks the intake valve. Now,you can also listen in the crankcase, and if you hear hissing in the crankcase, then you have bad rings,or a piston with a hole in it.
