94 Lexus gs300 sets code 42 (back up speed sensor) changed, cleared, several cycles later back on.

Code 42 Vehicle speed sensor circuit fault. What this means is that the circuit has a problem, that can be the VSS or it can be anywhere in the wiring or even the ECM module. You need a scanner to directly see what is going on with the speed sensor signal output. That means a trip to a dealer or well equipped shop that has the correct scanner and knows Lexus repair.

RPM's go high when driving but then go back to normal

What you are describing sounds normal. RPM's stand for revolutions per minute. Each minute your engine is running, the pistons are going up and down. When you are not going anywhere, your engine is idling and so the RPM's should NOT be very high. However, when you race up a hill, your RPM's SHOULD be high because your engine has to work hard to climb the hill or to go fast.
Idle speed= 650 Revolutions Per Minute. That means your engine cylinders each work 650 times in One minute.
At freeway speeds, your engine will revolve somewhere between 1600 and 2100 times per minute. I hope that helps.

When im driving, the car will lose all pull and though i am in drive, the rpm's will race and the speed will drop, then it may catch and then other times, it will not go back in geat

It sounds like transmission. When the transmission begins to be sluggish. You can push the gas and the rpm will rise, but the car will not go anywhere or gain speed. Check the transmission fluid level to make sure it is at the appropriate level. If it is low, fill to proper level. This should make it go into gear better.

1999 ford escort (lx i think) speedometer

For lwthegirl; invest <$20 in an aftermarket service manual from Haynes or Chilton.
They are available from any chain parts stores and will pay you back with time many times over.

For the 'guest' I would recommend the same since it will show you where the speed sensor is hidden.
There are several possibilities; wheels, drive shafts, etc. essentially anywhere that is related to road speed and independent of engine or transmission.
