You have water getting into your engine bay, it may be running down the firewall to your ECM and PCM cable bundles and seeping into the car or you may be spraying water into your airbox.
check to make sure your airbox is tight and look and feel under your dash for a wet spot near the fire wallis it's your airbox,,,, stop spraying at it, if it's wet under your dash take it to a shop to get it sealed correctly

Water getting into your engine bay will not cause this problem, unless its getting into your intake. NOW thats happening because of the pressured water being forced into it. When your spraying the front of your car, spray at an angle, not in a straight line at it. If water getting into your engine bay is bad, explain what happens when it rains and you drive your car, water splashes. I know on my Spyder, my ECU is located by my feet on the driver side in the center of the car

Okay like I said it "May" be seeping into the firewall.

it could be the coil pack or even your immobiliser. try disconnecting your immobiliser. they seem to have bad-parts/dry-joints in them after a few years.

pop off the distributer cap and dry it out well. Put it back on and it should work. This happened to my 97 jetta too...also if I go through large puddles at a quick speed this may happen too. There isn't good electrical contact with the moisture.
