1. Run the self check by starting with the key in the locked position.

2. Push and hold the trip reset button and turn the key to the unlocked position.

3. Release the button and the gauges will sweep through their self check and the odometer will run the segment test.

4. If the odometer does not light up the segments and the tachometer doesn't sweep, replace the Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

1999 chrysler cirrus tachometer works right then will drop to zero and not work

Sounds like the tach is either bad and should be replaced or there is a short or loose connection to or from it. Check the wires in and out of it. If it's in the dash, though, it won't be easy to get to. Good luck.

In the Ford Ranger, the light switch can be found in the door, right by the latch. You may need to use some WD-40 to get to work properly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Digital odometer or tachometer only works sometimes.

It could be that you have a bad instrument cluster. Then again, it could be as simple as a loose connector. It could also be a bad communication link between the instrument cluster module and the engine control module or between the instrument cluster module and the body control module. These modules all share some of the same information.

The place to start would be to scan your computer network and see if there are any fault codes present. Please note that I said "computer network" - NOT "engine control module". Most generic OBD code readers (including those that are used at many parts stores as a sales tool to sell you a bunch of parts you don't need) can only access memory codes in the engine control module. They cannot scan the body control or instrument panel modules.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

While driving my battery light came on followed closely with the ABS light & brake light. Then the speedometer, odometer & tachometer quit working. Now it won't start.

Sounds like the car was running on just the battery. Recharge the battery with a plug-in battery charger, then see what happened to the charging circuit--alternator, drive belt, blown fuse--loose wire. This should have set the check engine light.
