Transmission linkage adjustment

There is a linkage arm connected on the outside of the transmission that has a cable that runs up into the steering column and connects to the gear selector armature. The cable could be stretched, broke, or the gear selector actuator could be worn. You will need a good service manual to troubleshoot what may be the problem.

I cant put the car in any gears the leaver just goes up and down

Your gear selector cable is broken somewhere between the the selector itself to the transmission..it's not hard to check, just have somebody pull up and down on the gear selector and you lay under the driver door looking under to see where the cable is wobbling

Gear shift stick moves from Park to any of the other gears, but stays in Park. It's sort of loose, as if the stick shift got disengaged from whatever other components are down below.

It did, if it is calble controlled then the cable broke from either the gear selector under the dash or on the transmission . 3 places it breaks at 1 the gear selector under the dash or the center console, connection came out or broke 2. on the transmission gear selector area there is a bushing that it connects that breaks off, 3. inside the transmission, the prawl got loose (rare but happens)
