SOURCE: How do/can you adjust clutch?

The clutch on the cougar is hydraulic and is self adjusting the closest thing to do is bleeding the clutch to make sure there is no air in the line that can cause the clutch to not fully engage. if the clutch is slipping you more than likely are going to have to replace it. however if the car is off and you can't go through all the gear your shifter cables may need adjusting. Btw, whatever you do not use ATF in your MTX75 tranny!!!! its bad you need to be on ford honey its about 15.00 a qt or the next best thing is royal purple. any questions feel free to contact me jarochodveracruz@hotmail.com

Replace them both, the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder. New clutch fluid, bleed the slave cylinder, and clutch should be back.

How adjust the clutch on 2001 ford mustang 3.8

Per the Ford owners manual:

The clutch on your

vehicle is operated by

a cable. As necessary, adjust the clutch as described

below.

1. Turn the engine off and shift into 1 (First).

2. Put your foot under the clutch pedal and gently

pull it up until the pedal stops.

3. Push the clutch pedal down slowly. You will hear a
click as the clutch adjusts itself.

2002 merc cougar 5 speed, slow to increase speed after it gets up to 20 for me to shift into 2nd gear, as the same jarring motion as when you to good at shifting a standard, the jerking motion. still acts...

sounds to me that your clutch needs to be replaced. There is no adjustment on the clutch pedal. It sounds like the fly wheel will need to be surfaced also.

There is a hydraulic clutch in my 2001 cougar and it doesnt seem to be ingaging the gears properly. do you know what could be wrong.

You need to check and see if the reservoir is full of fluid. If its low, it may have cavitated and drawn air into the system. If its low it is leaking out of the master or slave cylinders, the seals are going bad in either the master cylinder on the fire wall or the slave cylinder at the bellhousing.
First thing to check is the reservoir level.

2001 mercury cougar, master cylinder ran dry because slave cylinder below is leaking at the firewall. I filled the master cylinder and tried bleeding the clutch at the transmission until fluid stream...

No, you don't need to replace the clutch itself.
Don't be surprised if the slave cylinder replacement doesn't fix it.
Could be the master cylinder.

2001 mercury cougar has no drive gears. reverse is fine.

Your transmission shifts are controlled by the PCM, Powertrain Control Module. It can be scanned for transmission fault codes which can guide your diagnostics. Autozone can do this for free. You would have to get the car there or find a technician who will bring their hand held scanner to our car.

But, try this first. Disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour. This will clear all the shift tables and the Keep Alive Memory (KAM). Reconnect battery and see if you now have forward gears.

If no luck with fault codes, this could be a possibility that requires a trans teardown.

MERCURY: 1994-2000 MYSTIQUE
1999-2001 COUGAR
ISSUE: Some vehicles may exhibit no forward gear ranges due to the misalignment of the forward/coast clutch cylinder snap ring with respect to the legs of the forward clutch piston.
ACTION: During assembly of the forward/coast clutch cylinder, the gap in the select fit retaining ring should be located midway (i.e., 45 degrees) between adjacent legs of the forward clutch piston. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Prior to installing the forward and coast clutch plates into the cylinder, note the location of the four (4) forward piston legs ( Figure 1 ).
  2. Mark the top of the cylinder with a felt tip marker midway between any two adjacent legs (i.e., 45 degrees or 4 external spline teeth from the center of any leg) ( Figure 2 ). NOTE: THE FORWARD PISTON LEGS WILL NO LONGER BE VISIBLE WHEN CLUTCH PACK AND RETAINER IS INSTALLED.
  3. Following the Service or Workshop Manual procedure, install the clutch plates.
  4. Position the ends of the snap ring such that the gap is aligned with the mark on the top of the cylinder (the 45 degree mark) ( Figure 3 ).
  5. Perform end clearance check as required.
