Turn the key on. Look at the security light or DIC. If t he light stays on(after a couple seconds) or DIC displays security. The reset for it is.. Turn the key on for ten minutes, off for thirty seconds. Try to start. The relearn is three times this, try to start after the third time. Have a battery charger on it. Battery goes low or you accidentally hit the starter, you have to start all over. If the light goes off, it's not security. Have the codes read. If you want to throw more money at it. replace the crank sensor. This may be the reason for no spark.
Does it crank or not? If no crank then look at the starter or ignition switch. If crank but no start then look at the ignition system. Check for spark at the plugs and also check the fuel pressure. If there is spark try spraying a little starting fluid into the intake. See if it starts and stays running. If it stays running reply back and I will explain why.
Check cables must be tight at battery & starter. You must have 12 volts coming out of battery to starter. Pull your dip stick is it over filled or milky looking. If so you very likely have water in engine. Can you turn the fly wheel or is the engine locked up? Drain the oil replace filter remove spark plugs turn engine backward to unlock engine. Drain fuel and replace fuel filter. Remove air filter has it gotten wet? Now crank it over with Air filter & spark plugs out. Now put in new air filter spark plugs dry wires & coils. And start the car, If car starts don't drive drain transmission change filter. If it did not start you may have done damage to computer or wiring. But you got to see if engine is locked up if 12 volts is to starter & that no water is in oil or fuel.
yes you should be able to hear the fuel pump run for about 5 seconds once the key is turned to the on pos. check to make sure you have spark. if you do try having someone spray air intake or carb cleaner into intake manifold while you crank. If the truck starts right up for a second (or stays running as you keep spraying) Id say you have a bad fuel pump and id change the sending unit also. (First check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay) GMC and Chevy are nororiously known for having bad fuel pump/sending unit problems. I have prob changed over 60 myself.
The engine is rarely starved for air enough to not start, so that's not as likely. Same goes for the fuel filter unless you've been dumping leaves and dirt in your tank.
Try spraying starter fluid liberally on the air filter and then trying to start. If it kicks over more than usual, then it's a fuel problem, not a spark problem. If not, suspect the coil, plugs, and wires.
I would check a few things:
Load test the battery. If its got any age on it at all, this could be the culprit.
Test the starter.
Check for loose connections at the distributor cap. Make sure the rotor in the cap is seated and that the cap is properly seated.
Check for loose connections on the battery, the starter and make sure you have fuel pressure on the injector rails (key on, detent the shrader valve .. you should get fuel).
If it doesnot crank at all look for starter/starter relay/starter relay fuse. Most probably wiring coming to starter is loose, try to tighten it more (push towards starter). Also I would check antiteft system (if it is provided for your car) as some BMW have immobilizers.
If it cranks no start look for spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, coolant temperature sensor, O2 sensor, fueling system (fuel pump cutoof switch, fule pump relay, fuel filter).
