I vaguely recall reading something in the owners manual of my '97 328 regarding the trunk and the master key. Something about locking things with the master key so that valets cannot open your trunk with the valet key.
Try unlocking the driver door or the trunk with the master key (the original key that had the LED flashlight in it.

The problem is that your roof(SOFT TOP) lid isnt closing properly. If you open the roof lid you see there is a button on one of the latches that tells the car that the roof is securely closed if your roof lid is not secure the trunk wont open. To test this press down on the roof lid and the try to open the trunk.

i believe that your trunk is unlocked and to prevent damage the system locks it self, check the trunk.
lock it with your key then try it out.
that happened on a audi cabriolet and we locked up the trunk and problem solved. let me know if that helps, if not i will try something else

do you have a ski hatch in middle of back seat ? if not then allegedly you "make" one and reach through with an improvised tool to release the boot catch from inside !!!!!!
look on t' bright side . your boot is next best thing to a safe on wheels.

Your Convertable's trunk not opening?

If the trunk of your convertable is not openig nit is probably because the convertable roof lid is not closing properly, To check this simply press on the roof lid while someone then try's to open the trunk.

Search the BMW forums like Pelican Parts or DTM Power or United Bimmer Community. When I read of problems with convertible trunk lids, a common suspect is a failure in the system that won't allow the trunk to open when the roof is down.

the trunk is your back lid.
there should be a switch where you insert your key to open it
turn it until it locks
and check the light to see if is still flashing
