I have a 96 for taurus. While driving it starts

I have a 96 for taurus. While driving it starts to choke up and will eventually not go past 10mph, on a full tank of gas. The car smells like its overheating, but the thermometer is only at the half point at times.

Well here is my problem with the cat, I have the rear one removed and a piece of tail pipe put in...and yet the problem is still there.

The car has been fine since I did this, and now a year later it is acting up yet again!

  • nny999o Jun 19, 2009

Well the car wont accelerate,or rev at all! I dont know what else to do. I turned it on, foot to the floor, and nothing but some choking. it only revved to about 2-3 and that was it.

This is a good indication that the catalytic converter is bad.  Other symptoms include a smelly sulphur like exhaust, a lot of heat coming from the exhaust (in the middle of the car), a lot of smoke from the exhaust.

If the car is revving high (foot to the floor) and won't accelerate, you should check the transmission fluid. Since we've ruled out the catalytic converter, sounds like the transmission is slipping.  If the fluid level is good, check it for color.  If it's brown and smells burnt, it needs changing along with the filter.  If the color and levels are good, have a transmission shop check it out.

Even a poorly tuned engine running on 1 or 2 cylinders would run enough to let your car travel more than 10MPH.  I'd have it towed to a transmission shop as I think that is most likely your problem.

99 ford taurus starts up but doesnt drive more than 10 miles per hour and temperature starts to rise

maybe a coolant thermostat that is faulty, a collapsed or perished hose..

It could also indicate cylinder head gasket/cylinder head problems.

Ten miles is about the correct distance for a car engine to reach normal operating temperature. If your temperature gauge continues to rise beyond normal ..ie. overheating .. you risk causing a lot of damage to your engine.

If you're not sure what to do or look for - get somebody to check it out for you

When I start my 96 ford Taurus I have no radio or windshield wipers or speedometer. But when turn key backwards radio and wipers work

I am betting it is your ignition switch- it is just like any other type of switch, in that it has contacts that eventually wear out. Once you turn the key to start the car, it returns to a position that maintains the contacts to power your accessories, and it sounds like those contacts inside the ignition switch are worn or broken. The "acc" contacts when you turn the key backward are rarely used so they are still in good shape, unlike the "run" contacts which get hit every time you start the car.

96 taurus shifts out of 1st @3200 then gos to2nd only to gos back

Possible solution:

Too many drivers neglect to change trans fluid or filter until trans is trash.
You might try doing that. Remove the oil pan and install a new filter and clean out the pan gook.
It 's a 25% chance you can drive ok again.
