Question about 1998 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

Spark plugs difficult to replace

My 98 Chevrolet Lumina has a 3.1 V6 in it. The engine sits sideways with respect to the front of the car. The 3 spark plugs on the front of the engine are easily accessed, but the three on the other side are not. A mechanic who replaced them a few years ago said that the engine mount had to be loosened, and the engine moved over to access those back 3 spark plugs.

Is there any way to access/remove/replace those back three spark plugs without shifting the engine (I can garuntee you that I can't find a way to get my hand between the engine and the firewall).

The engine does need to be shifted to replace the rear plugs, but it is easy. Take out the dogbone engine mount in the front of the engine compartment and push the vehicle backwards while still in park , then throw the parking break on once the engine tips forward.

2003 ford windstar spark plug wires diagram

I\'m assuming you have the 3.8 engine, although i believe the firing order is the same on all there v6 sideways mounted front wheel drive Windstars. That firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, with 1-2-3 going from left to right on the back side of the engine and 4-5-6 left to right on the front side of the engine.Looking straight down at the coil from the front of the car,you\'ll see 2 rows of coil terminals. The row on the right side is 1-2-3 going from top to bottom, row on left side is 6-5-4 going from top to bottom. Hook the number 1 coil terminal to the number 1 spark plug ,being careful to use the spark plug wire that is closest in length to the length you need. If your just replacing wires, yuo shouldn\'t have to much trouble. If your nreplacing the spark plugs you will find the ones in the rear, especially the number 2 [the middle one} are pretty difficult without removing the cowling. A total pain brought to you by the designers at Ford!

I have a 2003 chevy venture van 3.4 V6 I need to know where #1 spark plug is located on the engine

Number one on a V6 is on the end that drives the alternator. One bank is closer to that end. So passengers side, front of car.

I have 1988 pontiac grand prix se with 2.8 v6 i have 3 spark plugs on the back and 3 on the front i replaced the the spark wire but i dont know what wire gose where in the spark coile

this engine is turned sideways in the engine compartment. looking at the front of the engine, where belts and pulleys are mounted, the odd number cylinders are on the left, the even to the right. starting from the front of the engine, counting towards the rear, the cylinders are numbered 1, 3, 5 on the left and 2,4,6 on the right. remove the spark plug in the number one cylinder and place a peice of tissue in the hole. now crank the engine in very short bursts. as soon as you hear the engine crank, let off the key. check for the tissue to fly out of the spark plug hole. once the tissue flies out, the number one piston is up. now you need to take the cap off the coil, and see where the rotor is pointed. hold the cap over the rotor to see which terminal lines up with the rotor contactor. connect one end of the plug wire to the corresponding terminal, and the other end to the number one cylinder spark plug after it is reinstalled. from here the coil terminals are numbered in a clockwise direction. the firing order for your engine is 1-2-3-4-5-6, so you just connect one end of a plug wire to the number two terminal, and the other end to the spark plug in the number two cylinder. repeat this procedure for the remaining wires,

I replaced my spark plug wires on my 1996 chevy truck. may have crossed one, need a diagram from the spark plugs to the distributer cap.

Since you didn't state whether it is a V6 or V8, I'll give you both.

V6 -4.3Liter
Firing Order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap, faces the front of the engine.

->Drivers side, spark plug order in engine, starting from the Front going back:
1-3-5
->Passenger side, spark plug order in engine,
starting from the Front going back:
2-4-6

If it's Electronic, the distributor cap has a Left side, (Drivers side), and a Right side, (Passenger side)
Starting from the Front, going back on the Left side,
3-1-5
Starting from the Front going back on the Right side,
2-4-6

V8-5.0, 5.7, and 7.4Liter
Firing Order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap,
faces Front, towards the Drivers side.

Electronic distributor cap has two sides. Drivers, (Left), side and Passenger, (Right), side.
Starting from Front going back on Drivers side,
1-7-3-5
Starting from Front going back on Passenger side,
8-2-4-6

Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Drivers side:
1-3-5-7
Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Passenger side:

Changing spark plugs in my 1996 lumina van with 3.4L engine w a/c it looks like a bear of a job, cant even see plugs from under neith

To access you rear plugs, you need to disconnect the front top engine mount, then put the vehicle in neutral and pull the engine forward (with a large pry bar) and lock the engine to the mount base using the engine mount bolt. Don't forget to chock your wheels so the vehicle doesn't roll away. And really, the job isn't difficult at all.
