Nobody reads FSM, nobody reads the chapter , on cars tests?
is that it? throw i the towel at first fail?
wow.
ok the book shows these simple tests, in order
exact trans model not stated. so generic hyramatic answer.
gee , fresh ATF flush the clogged filter? you think pumps can suck ATF through a packed filter, why?
1: STALL TESTS, 1ST AND Reverse, (if tranny slips do #2)
2: line pressures tests.
3: if all above good the hydramatic has 2 parts that can fail.
one is the tail shaft governor. some have hidden screens too.
if dead, or gear cracked, 1st gear is forever. easy fix.
4: vacuum modulator bad, they can leak inside, and kill line pressure to the governor.
5: the kick down cable (TV) at the any point and at a/t port valve.
can stuck fully out, and delay shifts, so far out , you;d never find it.

all that is covered, in the FSM, the factory service manaul
ever heard of that, all cars have one, and amazing covers all this.

if transmission, has Tcm BRAIN, THE TESTS Vary greatly
no ? TV cable, no modulator, and not governor.
so in this case scan the TCM. the PCM on this car does not shift car.

post trans name fully off its sticker, some cars have 3 transmission choices, stick and 2 autos. one might be, electronic shifted, TCM
92 is a transition year.

Your probably looking at a transmission rebuild. But it is sporadic. Could be a valve body problem or solenoids. and electrical. Throw it on a scanner and find out.

The check balls I put back in were slightly larger. You should be able to get them from any transmission shop or the Chevy dealer. I got my gasket from the Chevy dealer.

may be low on fluid as that wont shift the pistons in the valve body of the transmission
due to no fluid pressure!

SOURCE: I have 1992 Geo Metro

Did you change the transmission? You state you are trying to change it. I woulkd think all you need is a new valve body. If the valve body is bad it will not shift the rans automaticly all the time. It has pistons in it and they are sticking. When they do that the trans will shift manually only

92 geo metro with automatic transmission will not go out of 1st gear sometimes

my guess is its not electric shifted, (what trans model is it)
so step 2 in the FSM book says.... and i paraphrase
step1 is stall test (my guess passes in 1st and reverse)
step 2, line pressure test?
if that fails, tranny is bad.

Transmission module

automatic transmission, right?
dont shift , impliese but fails to say, by whom.???
on mine a 5speed manual stick, it can't shift by many a way.
ill take a wild guess and its an A/T
Don't shift.

ok, now I scratched head, do you mean
it stuck in 1st gear.
or did you mean its slipping , and feels like in neutral at all times.
or skips gears?

during these early transitional years, they had 2 transmissions
the newer one is electrically shifted.
and going farther we need to know what trans is really truely there.
we are blind here and cant see what you have.
if your car is a TCM shifted tranny (TCM is tranny brain, puter)
it has scan codes. so dump the tcm error codes.

http://geometroforum.com/topic/5011680/1/#new

or log into alldata.com and read the TCM page.
its not a secret , all metro FSM cover this.
fsm means , the Factory service manual. get one.
or log in.

On a 1992 Geo manual transmission, What positions do the two shift actuators need to be in to put the tranny in neutral

this m/t has very complex shift linkage.
you should by a real FSM for the car and see the many long pages on topic there,
the words just for the lever are here
  1. At the console, loosen the gear shift control housing nuts and the guide plate bolts.
  2. Adjust the guide plate by displacing it toward the front and rear so that the gear shift control lever is brought in the middle of the guide plate at the right angle.
  3. Once the guide plate is positioned properly, tighten the guide plate bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm) and then the housing nuts to 4 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
"
try a real fsm. you wont be sorry ! I promise !

1994 geo metro automatic transmission wont shift manuallywhen warm.

is it slipping,?
if the rpms rise and car dont speed up , in direct proportions that is slip.
is it?
if the engine has full power in 1st, the the transmission is bad.

not sure what shift manually means,
Drive to low? low to high. what? be exact in statements/
better stated what it does good and bad, and when. all modes.
are you saying the trans shirts perfectly in AUTOMATIC when cold./?

There is a transmission controller that is located under the dash beside the right hand side of the steering column. It is held on to a bracket by two 10mm bolts. A change in that transmission control computer will make the transmission shift like new
