Question about 1981 Ford F 100

Stator wire from alternator

I have a 1981 ford f-100 with a inline 6. I removed the engine and disconnected all the wiring from the alternator. The wiring loom that goes to the alternator has the stator wire, the battery wire and the field wire.Checking the wiring loom that goes to alternator, I have a wire that comes out of the loom that has a female spade on the end. After checking wires that go to the alternator, that single wire that comes out of the wiring loom is the stator wire and I am not sure where to hook it up.Can you help me please.

There are three wires that connect to the alternator: ORN to the field terminal, WHT/BLK to the stator terminal, and BLK/ORN to the battery terminal. The female spade must connect to a male spade on the alternator.

You can find a wiring diagram at autozone.com. You can register for free; list your make, model, year, and engine size when registering.
After registering, click on "repair help", then "vehicle repair guides", scroll down to "chassis electrical", click on that. Scroll down to "wiring diagrams" under "select a chapter". When wiring diagrams come up, scroll down to the two pages on the '81 F-100. Good luck.

Alternator replaced

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The different engine applications that the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are equipped with utilize different types of alternators. The following is a list of vehicle applications. For 1986-90 vehicles:

The 3.0L and the 3.8L engines utilize a side terminal alternator.

The 2.5L and the 3.8L (with Police Package only) engines utilize an alternator with an integral rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal fan and regulator. For 1991-93 vehicles:

The 2.5L, 3.0L and 3.8L engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L and 3.2L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal regulator and fan.For 1994-95 vehicles:

The 3.0L, 3.8L and 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.2L SHO vehicles utilize an alternator with a internal regulator and fan.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the adjusting bolt.
3. Remove the alternator drive belt from the drive pulley.
4. Tag and disengage the wiring terminals from the back of the alternator. The stator and the field wiring are the push-on type of retainer. After depressing the lock tab, the connector should be pulled straight off of the terminal to prevent damage.
5. Remove the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the alternator from the engine.
6. Position the alternator on the engine.
7. Install the alternator pivot bolt and the adjusting bolt, but do NOT tighten the bolts until the drive belt it tensioned.
8. Engage the wiring terminals to the alternator, as tagged during removal.
9. Install the drive belt over the alternator drive pulley, then adjust the belt tension using Belt Tension Gauge 021-00019, or equivalent.

When adjusting belt tension, apply pressure on the front housing only.

10. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 30-45 ft. lbs. (41-61 Nm), then tighten the pivot bolt to 50-70 ft. lbs. (68-94 Nm).
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope helps.

How do i wire up an electronic ignition in a 1970 Ford F100 that was originally on a points system?

Hey! One of my favorite projects here. The simplest way to go. First you need to make sure the wireing harness is setup for TFI system. It should have a couple big connectors by the driver side fender well in the engine bay. You will need a TFI module. Next you can use the original distributor or buy a new electronic one. If you use the original you have to buy a new stator and cap. I also recomend a new coil and preferably get rid of the balast resistor. This should complete your project.

I need a diagram showing the spark plug wires on a ford 302 motor

FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Fig. 1: 300 cid (4.9L) inline six-cylinder engines Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4 Distributor rotation: Clockwise 85762008.gif
Fig. 2: 232 cid (3.8L) V6 engine Firing order: 1-4-2-5-3-6 Distributor rotation: Counterclockwise 85762006.gif

How do i replace the alternator?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped with a pulley cover shield, remove the shield at this time.
  3. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt. Remove the adjustment arm to alternator bolt. Pivot the alternator to gain slack in the drive belt and remove the belt.
  4. Disconnect and label (for correct installation) the alternator wiring. NOTE: Some models use a push-on wiring connector on the field and stator connections. Pull or push straight when removing or installing, or damage to the connectors may occur.
  5. Remove the pivot bolt and the alternator. Fig. 1: Alternator harness connections 86753014.gif
Fig. 2: Remove and set aside the alternator belt 86753300.jpg
Fig. 3: Remove the alternator pivot bolt 86753301.jpg
Fig. 4: Tag and disconnect the wiring harness connector 86753302.jpg
Fig. 5: Remove the alternator when it is completely detached 86753303.jpg
    To install:
  6. Position the alternator assembly onto the vehicle. Install the alternator pivot and adjuster arm bolts, but do not tighten them at this time.
  7. Install the alternator drive belt and adjust the drive belt tension.
  8. Once the proper belt tension is reached, tighten the adjuster bolt to 24–40 ft. lbs. (33–54 Nm) and the pivot bolt to 40–50 ft. lbs. (54–67 Nm).
  9. Reconnect the alternator wiring.
  10. Install the pulley shield, if equipped.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

I removed my distributor from my ford inline 6 cylinder engine but I forgot to mark the location. How do I put it back in the right position, and how do I find TDC?

this is the way i do all my cars and trucks
take off the coil wire and the dist cap, take out #1 plug
have someone help you, place your finger over #1 plug hole but not in the cylinder but over it,
have your helper tunk the key and turn over the motor just a tunk as in maybe 1/8 of a turn keep tunking it until the compression pushes out your finger your at #1 so look at the rotor button of where it is pointing and mark it on the dist then put the cap back on and place #1 plug wire on the post where you marked it
