SOURCE: Engine stalls when stepping on gas pedal and will not idle on its own.

Have you checked the ignition timing? Maybe you need to turn the distributor to the left or right if you don't have the timing light gun

Does it start right back up after it stalls? make sure all conections are tight at fuel pump, sounds like it could be loosing ground at pump, or hot lead is loosing its connection at pump. Also fuel pump relay could be getting hot and quits working.

Out of the blue . truck looses power and wants to die. not letting it die by hitting gas peddle it runs but starts back firering supper bad. truck dies .starting up it doesnt want to put . made it home .....

if you have replaced cap and rotor plus coil and it seemed to fire up then i would take the next step. For sure put your new plugs and wires on then make sure you have replaced your air filter, and change out your fuel filter, fire up the vehicle if it doesn't start I would suggest changing the fuel pump. If it starts up make sure you put in some BK fuel injector cleaner in your fuel it might be you have dirty injectors. If all fails then get back with me and we will look else where. Good luck hope this info helps you out

Keeps back firing and stalls

You probably have the distributor installed one tooth off. Or if it was doing this before you did all this the timing chain has jumped a tooth. remove the distributor cap, then set the timing mark on top dead center, then have someone watch the rotor and tell you when it moves then check how many degrees it moved. It should not be no more than about 2-3 degrees if more than that you probably need a timing chain and gears. BigD

It still back fires and stalls when driving it

check the ignition timing is correct. next if it is a v8 check the firing order of the wires as a crossed wire will give this effect

92 civic engine stalled while driving; fuel pump works; replaced all plugs seeing some oil on old ones. only one plug fires; is coil still working? or the distributor? haven't checked fuel...

Check the ignition distributor cap and clean the electric contact points it might be already dirty.

if one has a spark that means your ignition coil is still okay. Remove the whole cap and check the inside part and clean it, use emery board.
Check also the high tension wires( spark plug wires ).
Hope Fixya helps you!

My sidekick will just die or barely run it died

last year, OBD1 car (dumbb ECU)
no scan tools for it
if you run on the road with that hack , and wreck
expect a nice fire. fuel fire.
if you used a voltmeter and say 12vdc there, all hotwiring stuff
need not be done. (
it stalled (misfire)
and then would not what? start but cranks ok?
3sp ,4sp auto or 5speed stick
16v engine or 8v, both are G16s but EFI radially different.
16v is MPI with 4 injectors, 8v is 1 injector TBI
try a new
cap,.rotor spark wires and spark plugs yet?
cant burn fuel with bad spark
i guess the cam bent did not slip as it run ok later, but is 60,000 mile belt. and will slip ignored.

next time it stalls
check headlamps they work, and all electric
then see if CEL glows key on, i must or ECU lost power
it has 3 fuse that can rust, IG coil, FI, and DOME.
the CEL must glow, is first checks.

The car will start run about 3-5 miles and then stall. So we will wait about an hour, and then it start up. We have replaced the conver, air filter, gas filter, also the fuel pump. We are stumped

You need to drive it, and when it stalls and won't start, then is when you need to check to see what you are loosing. Spark? fuel pump? or injector signal?
Spark, you will need to hook up a spark tester to one of the plug wires and have someone turn it over.
fuel pump, leave the key off for a minute, and then turn it to "run" and see if you hear the pump. (listen at the gas cap, as it should cycle for a second or two)
Injector signal, for this you need a "noid" tester that plugs in where your harness meets the injector, and have someone turn over the engine with the key, and you should see a blinking light, meaning that your computer is telling the injectors to fire.

My first guss would be a fuel pump, just would have to verify that when you first turn on the ignition to crank you can either hear the fuel pump turn on in the tank or not, if you cannot hear the buzz or whine noise from the pump in the tank you need a fuel pump. Fuel pumps are a very common problem with these trucks.

What my cause a misfire in a 98 dodge avenger

  1. A lot can cause a misfire:
  2. Primarily fouled spark plug(s) or bad wire(s).
  3. also a corroded distributor cap or rotor. a vacuum leak,
  4. A bad or leaking fuel injector,
  5. Engine out of time and mechanical engine faults including Compression leaks and sticking valves.
  6. More often than not it is simply a fuel or ignition system problem both of which are fairly easy to solve.
Troubleshoot your ignition by first assuring that you have fire.

If the engine does not crank at all pull the coil wire off at the cap and set it within an inch of the tower and crank the engine. sparks should emit from this wire to the coil.

You can test each individual spark plug wire this same way by just unplugging it and arcing the spark. then pull out the spark plugs to examine them and replace as necessary (on a dodge use champion plugs). the cap can be removed (make sure to put it on exactly as it came off and put each wire back exactly as it was or it will NOT fire correctly). to check for fuel disconnect the line at the fuel rail on top of the intake manifold and turn the key to ON. this will kick on the fuel pump and should push fuel out of the line as the pump primes. if this test works but you still are not getting fuel to a particular cylinder(s) start unplugging injectors while the engine is running and make a note of which one does not change the idle as this is your problem cylinder. remember any ignition or fuel system fault will disrupt your fuel/air ratio and can damage the catalytic convertor and o2 sensors
