ABS light stays on and the back up lights don't work

Assuming it's not just burnt out light bulbs or a fuse, you may have a faulty switch on the transmission; usually referred to as the neutral safety switch. It's external and fairly easy to replace. It can definitely cause the reverse lights to not work and depending on the failure it could possibly interact with the ABS. Those vehicles are also susceptible to odd failures caused by a bad ignition switch, tho usually you'll get some other strange things like a bunch of warning lights, intermittent radio function, etc. Verify that the reverse bulbs and fuses are good, then put it in reverse with a helper or mirror to see the reverse lights and wiggle/rotate the key. If the lights come on then you've diagnosed the ignition switch, a pretty cheap and easy to replace item.

My '02 vw jetta wont reverse. Takes 30 minutes to warm it up for reverse to work. Help?

Hello, you could have a transmission computer issue. Do you get any warning indicator lights or check engine lights when this happens? If the tcu (transmission control unit) is located in the passenger floorboard area then those are even more prone to tcu failure. If you have failure lights, I recommend you get the codes and get back to me asap. I will be more then happy to run them and let you know what your issue could be. Hope this helps. Park neutral position switch

Yes I would agree the trans selector switch has failed, provided the wiring is good.
The license plate lights would be on a different circuit tied into the regular tail lights.

replace brake peddleswitch first, if that dont cure, replace the throttle peddle switch, and if that dont worrk replace the reverse switch on gear box and the forward detector switch for the hill desent. as for the oil warning light it can only be one of three things , ie low oil, bad wiring or switch and last the worst of all oil pump failure.

The warning light that looks like a car with lights coming from the rear indicates what? This light is just below the check engine light on the dash.

This warning light should indicate that there is a rear light failure. Running lights, brake lights, signal lights, reverse lights. You should check all the bulbs to see if any are burnt out.
