A metal clip slides into a groove in the front of the shifter knob and secures the knob by sliding into a groove in the shifter lever. Slightly moving the knob up or down while installing the clip will help align the groove to the clip

2005 Impala gear shift button popped out. I have to put it back in each time I need to shift to D, R, etc. How can I remedy this problem without replacing the whole gearshift?

Re-attaching the knob to the gearshift is the key...Look for a hole on the lower section of the knob...if you cannot see it...remove the bottom chrome piece from the knob, (pry apart carefully not to scratch the chrome housing...you should see the small hole normally includes a small allen insert screw or Phillips screw...must be screwed in to the gear shift shaft to hold in place...if you cannot compare...visit a local salvage yard to experiment..."Pic A Part" is a national self help salvage yard. Hope this helps. If the button does not stay in the gear shift knob...you can replace the knob (with button) only...remove the knob as described above. Hope this helps.

It seems like it is not fully disengaging from 4 wheel drive, and it won't shift into overdrive. i hear the front end roaring going down the road.

possibly a transfer case motor problem make suer you are in 2 wheel drive, try shifting button from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive and make sure your tow haul switch is off on the end of the regular shiter

Will not shift out of Park. Any manual override technique?

There is small punh hole to the left of shiter knob. Pry out with small screwdriver, Use screwdriver to depress inside while moving shifter out of park. you will need to do the same to return to park.

Shifter wont shift the pickup into gear

Let's start with the basics. Key has to be in the ignition and ignition turned to the run postion. Battery has to be charged up. Brake pedal has to be depressed so the shifter will unlock, . If the shifter will not move, it could be several things. A faulty shifter unlock cylinder or wirng problem. A binding shiter cable or shift lever problem at transmission, or a problem with the shifter assembly on the steering column.

this vehicle uses a shiter brake interlock....check and see if the brake lights work,if they dont the fuse is blown or the brake switch is bad....past that you may need to find a reputable dealer in independant garage to look at it

1998 camaro, v6 automatic, gear shift knob ??

If it is neither suggestion by bunnydawg, try looking on the back of the shifter for a metal staple that needs to be pulled out.

Shiter

couple things apply brake when shifting out of non running vehicle or you should be able to with key still on the on position with engine not running apply brake shift down to nuetral then start vehicle up with applied brake shift into park

if this isnt working then inside key cylinder the k.c. pin that locks the column is broke or wore down you should be able to at least get the blazer into neutral to shift out back to park

under neith the blazer there is a saftey shift module that if this is worn it wont let you shift or you can shift with dead engine and no brake applied this might need to be replaced by tranny tech

the other way to unshift the shiter is have a buddy with you this is a little finness in what i say next
chock the wheels from rolling on a hill disengage the saftey brake now start pushing on the vehicle with engine off back and forth this disengages the 4x4 locked hubs gotta roll back a little but be sure not to let vehicle run over buddy

these are just a couple things off the top of my head that i can think of since im not actually there to see in person i hope this helped
