I have a 1997 F-250 HD. Driver door latch cable is broken at the handle end. I have a replacement cable, but need help figuring out how to remove the broken cable without breaking the plastic rod...

Door Handle/Latch Assembly NOTE: Due to the conversion from single 90-degree rod end shape to double 90-degree rod end shape, it may be necessary to remove more parts than the instructions indicate. This action will allow more maneuverability of the rod and ease the removal process.
Handle, Outside Door, Front Removal
  1. Remove the front door trim panel (23942) and front door trim shield (237A04) from the front door (20124). Refer to Section 01-05 .
  1. Disconnect the front door latch actuating rod (22152) from the handle link connector.
  1. Remove one nut and screw.
  1. Remove handle and pads from door.
----------------------
Some rods are double 90 degree rods, they require the handle or lach to be free when the rod is attached.
Some have plastic clips that slide onto the rod. they pop off sideways.

Broken door handle

Which door, front doors or slider. Front door handles are readily available at most auto parts stores. Pull off the inner door panel and access the inner 10 mm nuts which hold the handle to the door. Once the nuts are off pull the handle out from the outside and remove the actuator rod from the handle. Install the rod on the new handle and replace it in the door making sure the rod slides into its corresponding female connector in the door before attaching the nuts. Its a lot of tight finger work but you can do it with a little patience.

if you hit the lock button a couple times, will it finally lock?

If so, then you will need to take door cover off and lube up the connectors as they probably got corroded.

Broken exterior door handle, passenger sider ,sliding

Got this idea from mpvclub.com: Get some stainless or aluminum sheet metal screws, drill pilot hole into the handle and into the receiving part behind, then screw in the screw. Do on both sides of handle (get appropriate length screw.) When done, get some putty or hardener to fill in the screw slot, let dry, then sand smooth, then paint with body color. Result is great and inexpensive.
