Question about Honda Accord
I have a 1990 accord, my fuel economy is low i have tracked it to be 12-13 mpg. a check engine light turn on for my egr, when i accelerate dark smoke comes out the back, any thoughts?
Yes hook up to a code reader pull out trouble codes and follow steps in trouble shooting tree to repair problem. If you dont have a code reader or scan tool go to a parts store (Auto Zone,Pep boys) they will hook up and read codes out. They will try to steer you in the direction to go or just write down the codes and Google them in your computer and you will get list after list of how to fix the problem.

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER!!!! INSTALL A PUEROLATOR OR FRAM AIR FILTER FOR THE MODEL YEAR OF YOUR CAR. I DID THAT FOR MY 2007 CAMRY AND I PROBABLY PICKED UP 3-4 MPGS. THE TOYOTA FILTER MIGHT BE TOO RESTRICTIVE!!!

The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel
by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the
combustion process again. When the EGR valve goes bad, it must be replaced.
The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust back into the intake manifold. This exhaust mixes with the intake air and actually cools the combustion process. Cooler is always better inside your engine. The exhaust your EGR valve recirculates also prevents the formation of Nitrogen related gases. These are referred to as NOX emissions, and are a common cause for failing emissions testing. Unfortunately, your EGR valve can get stuck, causing NOX gases to build up. You'll know if your EGR valve is stuck or malfunctioning because your car will experience symptoms like rough idle and bucking on acceleration.
Here is a picture of where the EGR Valve is located (Accord 1999). Replacing it is fairly simple and straightforward. A vacuum line and a couple of bolts. You'll see what you have to do when you look at it.
If you are replacing the EGR Valve due to the Check Engine Light (MIL) being on with a DTC P0401 then I suggest contacting your Honda Dealer. There was a Product Update Campaign (PUD) in the fall of 1999 that corrected the problem.
Another times, the clean is the solution...I hope help yoiu with this. Good luck, and remember rated this help.

Sounds like your O2 sensor is malfunctioning. When the check engine light comes on, the computer goes into a preset mode bypassing the O2 sensor and that's why it suddenly runs good. Have the O2 sensor checked. You can also have the trouble codes read and they should point you in the same direction.

SOURCE: renault megane 2004 - when
it`s the oxygen sensor
thats why the car is mix fuel/air in wrong ratio generating unburned fuel in form of black smoke and check lights on
you got to change that sensor
