Check engine never goes off no matter what is done

I have a 97 Ford F150 that has had a check engine light on for the past 3 years. Everytime and I mean everytime they do a diagnostic they tell me it is the O2 Sensor then the EGR - well I replaced them all. Then the tell me it is my spark plugs and wires - had them replaced along with the cap and new air filter - still ON. The second I can get it off I immediately take it to the shop, get the inspection and less than a day later - yup you guess it the check engine light is back on. My most recent experience to see how to get it off cost me around $1500 where they replaced or checked:

Computer Diagnosis and Smoke Machine Test
Pitman Arm
DPFE Sensor
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Throttle Body Cleaner
MAF Sensor Cleaning Service
Manifold Hardware

Again the check engine light never went off. Someone please give me another option or an idea because so far in repairs to try and get it off has cost be about $4000 in total over the last 3 years. I am tired of paying for diagnostic tests and just getting the run around of being told the same stuff.

One or two things is going on it either is what i call a dummy light or ur computer is messed up may jus need to be reflashed or replaced.

I would be insane to even attempt to offer a solution to your problem. Even in "normal" situations testing is the only proper means of reaching a viable diagnosis. Obviously you have gone further than Even I would be willing to go in your attempts to correct this. It's a shame that the manufacturers can't even fix the stuff they produce. It is likewise shameful that you essentially have been charged that much money for essentially not repairing your truck. For less money, you could have replaced every control and sensor, including the harnesses!!!
At the point you are at, I'd suggest you get rid of it and chalk it up to a bad experience. It is eating you alive, and is worth less every year you keep it. I take stuff like this as a challenge, but sometimes you just have to get practical and let the thing go. (or park it and make it a long term project, pulling the entire harness and system apart and checking everything over item by item, wire by wire.)
Get another vehicle and you will sleep better!!!!
You don't need to "rate" my's an opinion more than a "fix"

97 Ford f150 xlt rear wheel drive. transmission not shifting into 3 shifts from 1 to 2 fine when in overdrive shifts in to 3 feels like neutral. Trans need rebuilt or replaced?

Are there any lights lit on the dash ? check engine , overdrive etc..
could be just a shift solenoid ... Try draining trans fluid an replacing filter. Have to drop transmission pan .. what's the fluid look like ? a nice pink color ? does it smell burnt ? Is it full ?

Check your on-line prices a rockauto...

Then take it to the muffler shop... or get that penetrating oil & get started...

97 ford f150 will not pass inspection

If you have a component problem (plug missfires, run rich, bad O2 sensors, etc.) the "check engine light" should have come on in the dash. Its possible that warning light is burned out.

You need to get a free scan from Autozone or Oreillys or a similar autoparts place. There may be problems a scanner can pick up or the source of all your problem is the onboard computer which is not lighting up the "Check Engine Light". Either way, a scan will let you at least know the computer is working.

If you have a V-8 with the Aluminum intake, there is a groove under the Airhorn gasket that gets sooted up. 8 bolts and a $10 gasket fixes it when you clean it. Also check the plumbing from the "Backpressure pipe", it goes from Exhaust to EGR pipes at back of engine. This can give burnt sulfur smell on accelleration if there are holes in it.

In some states you get a print out of the test and when they fail the mechanic at least will give you an estimate to fix the problem. There is also a liquid sold at Autoparts places to help your vehicle pass the test. It is a gas additive. Then since oil vapors are drawn into the engine to burn, clean semisynthetic oil will have less contaminants. Do an oil change and new Air filter before testing.

F150 97 4.2 V6. Runs fine at idle but when in

its posible that the inside lining of the tank is coming off and plugging the fuel pump strainer,or at least thats what happened to my f150,and its not getting enough fuel pressure.

Key cut for 97 ford f150

If you already have a key bring it to walmart. If you dont, take apart your ignition assembly and get the part that the key goes into and bring it to a lock smith. They are usually very good at making keys.

I had a similar problem with my 97 f150 4.6L. I work on it myself and after continuous check engine light with an EGR insufficient flow I replaced all 3 EGR components. (EGR valve, DTFP, and EVR regulator) Still got EGR insuffiecient flow. This Saturday I took the throttle body off (has the ports that EGR flows through) and WhaLaa!! It was totally, and I mean TOTALLY clogged with tar and gunk from the exhaust. 3 hours to clean it out and soak it and clean it all up. Fixed the problem, 300 miles later and it's still good with no codes. I have my own code reader so it made it easy to check sensors. All read "OK" now. It was worth the 5 hrs spent taking it apart and reassembling. I changed spark plugs and PCV too!! Good luck. You can do it yourself If you tell yourself you can.

My truck acts like it is starving for gas

You need to check spark plugs/wires/distributor cap.
Also good idea to check/replace fuel filter/air filter. It might be also bad fuel pump.

Check engine light

I have one that did the same thing until I repaired my transmission. I know it does not sound right but after looking it up transmission problems can cause the check engine light to come on.
