Yes, but you need to use distilled water to top off, as the dexcool in those systems will sludge up badly with tap water.

The overflow need to be filled with water?


Yes, it is important to include the overflow tank or bottle as integral with the radiator and coolant system as a whole. They all intermix. Actually, the level in the overflow tank is a true measure of the correct amount to keep your coolant at. There are two marks on the overflow: full hot and full cold. The coolant system on all modern cars is a sealed system and therefore should never require adding, save a very small amount through evaporation within the overflow tank- the only part that is open to atmosphere.

So once you get all the air out of the system that is possible, both in the engine and in the radiator, you have a full level everywhere, including the overflow tank where it should always remain somewhere between the full hot and full cold marks.

You are right that the overflow collects the heated radiator coolant. But it is due to the expansive properties of coolant-or water- that it expands when heated, (but not boiling-that is very bad news of a different sort). Your radiator cap is designed to open at a specific pressure, just enough to allow coolant to flow into the overflow. As the engine and coolant cools, it contracts, the level drops in the radiator, and a natural vacuum there will siphon the overflow tank back into the radiator until it is full again. That is why you have the full hot and full cold marks.

its either of the 3 ur water pump is weak and couldnt supply the right amount of coolant to ur engine / ur radiator is clogged or your thermostatic valve is stuck up that restrict full flow of fluid to the radiator thats why when u use the heater that uses ur coolant hot water as a heating unit the temp. goes down...

My 91 Chevy s 10 Blazer over heats in addition to check gauges light coming on what could be the problem?


There are 4 things you want to check in this order.
1. Make sure your fluid level is up to specifications.
2. Make sure the fluid is travelling through the radiator freely(water pump).
3. Make sure your thermostat is opening. This requires a great deal of caution, leave the radiator cap open (if it has one) and run the engine until the top radiator hose gets hot, If you have no radiator cap, watch for water rising or dropping in the overflow tank.Also watch for bubbles within the overflow or radiator.Also put all temp controls on high on the climate control center and feel for hot air once the engine reaches operating temperature(185-200 degrees). If you don't get heat within the regular time slot of 10-15 minutes you will need a new thermostat.
4. If you discover a large amount of bubbles within the radiator or the overflow tank than you've got a headgasket situation and should not drive the vehicle until necessary repairs are made. Thank you, Dana

I am leaking a huge amount of water and i dont


If you smell antifreeze inside the cab then it will going to be a heater core leak.

Use white paper and see if the fluid green (or same color as you radiator coolant.

ID the fluid is VERY IMPORTANT right now.

Condensation fluid from AC is just water.

There is a condenser drain behind the dash (near center). The passage way can be clogged and water may spill out on sharp let or right turn,

ID the color of the fluid first.

Monitor the coolant fluid level. If it goes do the look for the source of the leak.

I have a 99 Chrysler 300M that had a slight radiator leak...I had put stop leak in it and it seemed to help for awhile. I know that radiator is aluminum & plastic...well yesterday something happened...


If there is other leak other than the one you have found, air may have entered the system. To ensure that it does not get in and that your are filling up the correct amount of water squeeze the radiator hose on top after each fill to squeeze out the air. You can also let the engine run while pouring water one at a time.

Engine oil dipstick shows water and rust mixed in with oil


Everyone always jumps to head gaskets. There are plenty of MINOR things that can be looked at first.
The Volvo 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 Inline 5 Cylinder dipstick tube is known to develop a large amount of condensationin winter months and stop and go driving. What you see on your dip stick is possibly just condensation. Take off your oil cap and look under the cap and inside the valve cover. Is there any thick foamy oatmeal like substance or noticeable amounts of water? If your oil was saturated with coolant, you would be able to see it up there too. Check your coolant for oil. Volvo coolant is typically brown to orange, however make sure there is no sludge. Start the car with the cap off and keep an eye out for alot of bubbles. A large amount of bubbles is a sign of a bad head gasket. A couple here and there is just air in your cooling system.
Coolant, Transmission fluid, and Oil have several places they can mix. If you have a turbocharged Volvo, the seals in the turbo can go bad and cause a mix of oil and coolant. Your transmission cooler is also in your radiator, and if it cracks your transmission fluid and coolant can mix. I believe turbo models have an oil cooler built into the radiator as well.
Overall if your car sounds fine, you dont see oatmeal, your not using coolant and oil in excessive amounts, dont have white smoke, and your turbo isnt whining you probably just have condensation in your dip stick. If you are overly concerned you can send a sample of your oil to a lab and have it tested for traces of coolant. Headgaskets rarely fail on Volvo's, even the old ones....I have seen many that have gone to replace them have not found a failed gasket and end up finding a bad transmission cooler or a bad turbo.

You can purchase different fluids that will break down rust and corrosion, but if you have a very old or well worn (rusted) radiator it can cause leaks. I once worked on a 15 year old Ford Ranger where the person who had it before ran almost pure water in the radiator. The radiator ended up rusting out in the inside, and the cleaning fluids seemed to really help. It was odd, because the radiator appeared full, but when you went to drain it, only about a half a gallon would drain. It took me multiple applications of the fluids and flushing it about 6-8 times to get it cleared. This may be your problem.

First make sure your engine isn't hot. Typically, you just drain the old fluid in a pan and dispose of it properly. Don't let any sit on the ground or in an open container because animals will drink it.

I then simply place the drain plug back into the radiator, then pour about a mixture of anywhere from 30-50% antifreeze and the rest water. It is preferable that you use distilled water due to scaling.

In colder climates, it is more ideal to have a stronger ratio of anti-freeze verses water. Buy one of the cheap testing bulbs (they run under $2.00) to test your fluid.

Leave the top cap open, start your engine and let it reach operating temperature. When the thermostate opens (evidenced because your fluid levels at the top of the radiator will drop) you will then need to add more water to finish topping the fluid off just below the neck of the cap.

If you have a serious issue with rust, you could possibly look at having a garage flush the system for you. Some shops have the ability to flush the system under pressure. Usually they do only what I described above.

Radiator question


The way it works is that the water in the radiator will sit there and not circulate when the thermostat is not open until operating temp. is reached. Once it is reached you should see the water in the radiator circulate at this time.
