Might be as simple as disconnecting your negative (-) or black battery cable for 10 minutes or so and reconnecting. Otherwise, may need a dealership involved.

From Clint Smock - Moderator on here. 1998 Malibu with new key/ignition switch will not start/run....You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

He may have locked up the pin sequence. You might need to buy a new switch not that exspensive. Stay away from the dealership or it will be.

Solder and shrink tubing work fine for that. That is for the pk2 theft module that tells the car that you are using the correct key with the chip in it.

I would check the fuel pump turn key on do not start or turn engine over just until dash lights up and you should hear a grunt sound come from back seat area if you do not hear this grunt your fuel pump is not working. Also if you have a check engine light on you should have your can scaned with a OBD 2 scan tool to retreve and faults the cars computer might be undrer going.

SOURCE: i have a 1996 chevy

Check timing belt. Remove the oil filler cap and look at the rocker arm. If you get someone to turn the engine while you watch and you see no movement... it's a broken belt. If you see movement, perhaps the belt has slipped. Replace belt and re time.

SOURCE: I lost my 2005 Chevy Malibu key. Does the key program the car or does the car program the key chip? Once programmed, can an old key still start the car

Unfortuneately the key has to be programmed to the car. the old key wont work unless it is also reprogrammed at the same time the new key is programmed.

Key doesnt want to turn it takes a few tries in my 1998 chevy malibu

Sounds like your ignition and key are getting worn. You can try getting a new key made, but not at the hardware store. Go to a locksmith and have one made from the key code. The one you get from the hardware store will be worn like your current key and not work any better. If that doesn,t make a difference, you will have to get the ignition changed. You will have to get the new tumbler and key from the dealer.

Wire diagram for a 1998 Chevy Malibu

Hello, It sounds as if the theft deterrent system is tripped. Look at the key is it worn bad? If so get a new one made at the dealer. To do a key test isert the key, turn to start and release if theft light comes on leave key alone in the on position ten minutes after you try to start never turn off after you yurn to start it puts it in a certain mode, and do not bother it for about 12 minutes. When you come back to car turn switch off then turn to start and it should start thank you. Please rate this answer, thank you.

Help lost key

They key has a compter chip that inplanted in the key. A dub key wouldn't work. Take your title or registration with some form of picture id to any GM dealer and the would be able to make you a key. It will cost a few bucks, prices vary.
