Is it worth replacing leaking engine gaskets when this car has 180K and a lot of exterior dents. Runs fine aside from the burning oil smell.

it's overheating that wins the First order failures rule sets.
nothing else matters. cure that first.! find cause! first.

sounds (im deaf there, lol) that smoke is out tail pipe end and dissipates fast and is not smoke but steam, , oil smoke smells like burning oil and lingers. steam smells sweet like burning Antifreeze.
AF steam is a blown head gasket or far worse.
do a compression test first to see if it's even worth fixing????
most are NOT. (unless free labor, sure)

first learn steam from smoke
serious , watch moms tea pot. see that steam goes away fast.and very uniquely , now watch burning oil.
remove dip stick, drop the drip of oil on hot exhaust manifold.
smell that, that is oil burning, and lingers.
this will last you a life time of blown engines..... just one look and bingo. (my instructor in 1965 did in front of class)

got oil in the AF/ CARBON chunks in same.
water in oil, ? pan, engine . milky oil.
rad leak down test fail? can be lots of reasons even a cracked block.or head. not just gaskets.

Burning smell inside car. Not under hood. What could it be?

I had the same problem with my 2005 Honda Accord. I would happen only sometime but is a distant odor I smell from inside the cabin. Older Hondas sometimes have gasket problems that leak small amounts of oil onto the exhaust manifold. Ask the mechanic to go check the valve cover gaskets. They replaced a new gasket to my car at the Honda dealer and I haven't smelled that burning odor since then. Good luck.

1998 camry oil smells like fuel, 260,000 miles. out runs strong, Just replaced the valve gaskets, can anyone help me figure out what's wrong?

These engines do have chronic oil leaks onto the exhaust, hence the burning smell. When cam cover gaskets are replaced it is best to use the genuine Toyota parts, they seem to have some quality which lasts better.

Other places which leak are the distributor shaft o-ring seal, and crankshaft nose seal, behind the timing belt sprocket. These can be replaced. The crankshaft rear main seal will leak, but is expensive, so just leave it.

Double check coolant to make sure you don't have oil floating on top. It's either an exterior leak, which would mean head gasket or valve cover gasket or it's an internal leak which would also mean head gasket. It it was burning that much oil in that a time, it would run poorly and you'd most likely get a check engine light.

Gunk makes an oil solvent that stops oil burning. The smoke coming from exhaust would be o-ring issue. If its white smoke its oil, if its blue smoke its gas. Also Gunk makes a stop smoke solvent as well. Both these items are around 5 bucks at autozone and will help the issue. But the burning of the oil is def killing your gas mileage. But try those two gunk solvents and see if that helps.

Engine smoke and smell

You have a bad head gasket. So far the leak is not so bad but will eventually reach the oiling openings in the gasket so watch out for that. Change them as soon as you can

Bradley,
You have stated two problems. Coming to second first. Smell of burning rubber. in the car rubber is only at two places where it can burn, The tyres, unlikely as you have not commented upon your driving habits. Some people like to rev the engine so much before take off that the tyres go burning for the first few hundred meters. And then there is rubber on the wires and cables. You have to check the wires for any heat while the engine is running.
Coming to the first now. White smoke is generally of unburnt fiel and not oil. Oil alwayd give black smoke and that is the indication you get when the exhaust is giving black smoke. That means that the engine is consuming oil. if it is white then that indicates that the engine is cold and burning more gas/diesel. Is your a diesel vehicle?? But as you say it from under the hood. And that too behind the engine block. May be that the gasket is leaking from somewhere. If you could check the engine oil level for a few days early in the morning before starting the engine. If the level drops and the exhaust tail pipe does not blacken your finger when you rub it in it would mean that the oil is being burnt. Now what I suggest is that with the engine running and hand brakes on, go under the car with hood open and try to locate the source of the smoke. I am sure you would be able to locate it.
Then we talk again.

My van is burning oil (a lot of it) I just put in 4qt of oil two weeks ago, and again it's empty. What can i do to fix this

First you need to determine if the van is "burning" oil or "leaking" oil. If the exhaust is bluish in color, this is a good indicator that you are burning oil and you probably need a valve job. A common issue with vehicles this age is an oil leak around the valve cover gasket. Oil leaks and burns off on the manifold. If when you open the hood and smell a great deal of oil, this is more likely the cause of using so much oil. The best way is to inspect the engine compartment first. If you can't spot any excess oil there, get under the van and look for a leak near the oil pan, oil plug, or more forward toward the engine compartment. Hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck.
