I had to rev it to start and it would often die at intersections

Got a noisy power steering and I had to rev it to start and it would often die at intersections when I didn't keep the RPMs up.I don't know if this is related, but my car also loses power steering and has for some time. Is there any obvious solutions or things I can check?

The noisy power steering comes from to less or dirty power steering oil.
So please, replace that oil, and clean the reservoir and filter ( mostly IN the reservoir ).
**** the oil out of the reservoir. Turn the steering from left to right and back, and re-empty the reservoir. So on till most of the oil gets out.
Then clean up reservoir and all possible parts.
Refill reservoir. Turn steering totally left and right again. Refill reservoir if necessary. Go on till no air bubbles comes up in the reservoir. Top up oil to level.
Give it a try!

There should be a pressure switch for the power steering that regulates rpm' to the computer.
It should have an electrical connector on it and located on the rack and pinion assembley.

While stationery when I turn the steering wheel

you don`t say how high the rpms increase. there is a power steering pressure switch that bumps up idle when the steering wheel turns so the car won`t stall. depending on how much pressure is created determines how much to increase the rpms.

Ford Saginaw pumps are notoriously noisy power steering pumps. I have not had any that were not noisy. This is especially true when turning the steering wheel without the vehicle in motion.

It sounds like you may have a bearing race out of spec in your front hub assembly. Check for bearing play by pulling with your hands on each tire--if there is a clunking noise---replace the bearing.

Power steering pump issues

The oil is aerated, and hiig rpms while moving air jus mixes or aerates it further. Let sit fo 24 hors with **** cap loos. When ready to drive, don;t rev the engin. normal driving will cause oil to flow with aerating and as the oil heats up the air will be forced to seperate. The is nothing wrong unless your tank assembly was more than needed. it will clear . not to worry.
