Speed sensor location, Speed sensors info, Replacement. Some vehicles are equipped with two speed sensors, one for the computer another for the speedometer. I'm not sure about it in your case. I recommend you spend $20+ in a Haynes Repair Manual it'll have all the answers you'd need. I actually have the same manual on the link. You can try giving the transmission a tune-up most likely it'll work and that'll be that. Then we can try troubleshooting the speedo problem if you still have a problem with it. Once you take the transmission pan off you'll know if you have major damage or just in need of a tune-up.

Will not shift out of 1st gear, auto trans

If the speedometer doesn't work, then it is your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and if the speedometer does work then it is your TSS (turbine speed sensor). If the computer doesn't know both the vehicle and transmission speeds, it won't shift out of 1st gear.

Speedometer sensor is usually in the cars computer. Sounds like it's electrical though. Could be a sensor part of the alternator. Call Advanced or auto zone. Some places can test stuff like that for free.

Check the speed sensor on the tranny cause if the speedometer is not working the tranny will not shift. The computer will not recognize that the transmission is in motion so will not shift.
