Same diesel-like noise in subaru engine

I have the same problem with my 2002 Forester of EJ20 engine. It got this knocking noise when started the next morning and won't go away after some 20 minute or so.Doing so with some high revving or jerking the gas quick to try to kill the insulting noise. Did try to have it checked by the local Subaru dealership. And they estimate having to replace the pistons, rings, crankshaft bearings. I haven't done to bring it for repairs for I want to have some second opinion.

Essentially what the shop told you is that they want to do a total engine rebuild.... On a 89 vehicle this will easily exceed the street value of the car. In my opinion, this is not wise. If the noise is only present at startup and for a short time thereafter, you are at the beginning stages of failure.( a difference of a few thousandths of an inch can cause a noise) I would switch to a heavier grade oil (if you use a 10W anything, change to a 20W anything (like 20w50) or a straight weight like sae40.
This will mitigate the effects of wear for a while and give you time to save for another vehicle or find a good used engine to install (better option than rebuild as long as you can first hear it run and can verify it's not worse than the one you have) Using a thicker oil will not "repair" worn parts but can help buy you time. Don't rev the engine to make the noise go away...you will do more harm to it than if you just drove it normally.

Knocking noise near front of engine

On a very cold start (eg winter) older Subs often make knocking noise from the LHS of the engine. This is actually quite normal and is a "feature" of the oil paths in the engine. It goes away once the engine is warm.

Might also be the cam belt hydraulic sensor working loose. The tensioner pivot bolt can be done too light or fitted clumsily, and it strips the thread. If it gets too loose, the belt can jump teeth and bend valves.

I have a DOHC 1998 twin turbo EJ20 subaru BH5 , engine is knocking. Will a BG5 DOHC EJ20, slot in ....? are they the same ?

Yes they will bolt in. Make sure you have the sensors matched. You might have to do some playing with the computer to make it all work properly. Good luck and have a great day.

2005 Forester X Engine Knock...big end bearing??? That much???

The lower end of your motor that has the knocking noise will sound like a deep penatrating thud. That will be the rear bearing for the crack shaft. You can find a cheaper place to have it repaired. $3,500 sounds more right to repair at most places

Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Better to be safe in case something arcs.

Knocking noise at idle and accelearation

did you buy it privately or a dealer w/ a warrantee? If you have a warantee, use it.If not start by changing the oil& see if that gives you any results.use the proper oil for Subaru, not a Quick Lube.

Loud engine whine (like a jet noise) from 2002 subaru forester

Have you crawled under the vehicle and personally inspected your exhaust line from manifold to tail pipe? The roaring sound usually occur when there is a hole in the exhaust line. I had it happen to my forester before. A hole half the size of a dime made my subaru sound like my old 74 chevy pickup.
