If your vehicle has one. it usually snaps or threads into the back of the speedo at the upper end, and attaches to a drive gear on the transmission at the lower end.

SOURCE: "when do i change the cam belt on a peugeot 307 sw diesel"

usually you should do it for peugeot diesel at 122000 miles along with water pump and the tensioner roller that runs under the cambelt too. But to be on the safe side do it at 100000 and save the fortune.
It took me (DIY job) about 6-8 hours as i wanted to save 450 pounds.

SOURCE: timing belt replacement

hi mate
if you look on the front of the engine under the starter there is a small hole, (you can use a 5mm allan key in this hole to lock the crank) place allan key in the hole and hold it against the fly wheel while you turn the engine over in a clockwise direction by hand when the pin drops in you need to check that the hole in the cam shaft lines up with the hole in the head (should be about 4 o clock on the pully) and the 2 holes on the injection pump pully line up with the holes in the injection pump. (if these dont line up you will need to remove the allan key and turn the engine clockwise 90 degrees)
once all the the holes are lined up and the allak key is inserted into the flywheel, insert 3 m8 (13mm headed) bolts in to the hole on the cam pully and the 2 on injection pully. with all thes done your engine will be timed up and wont slip when refitting new belt.

Cam belt & leaking water How big a job is replacing the Cam belt on a Peugeot 207 Hdi (1.4) on a 2006 plate, please? The vehicle has done 76,000 miles. What would be the estimated cost? Thank you.

Peugeot have said 144K or 10 years on 1.4 HDi
If you are replacing the water pump it would be foolish not to replace the belt and tensioner at the same time.
Costs will vary depending upon garage chosen. It is a 2 1/2 hour ish job so that plus parts.

Free timing belt diagrams

the fsm covers this. but what engine>?
to work on engine, you must know what is there.
7 engines.
at least.
1.6 thru 3.0 both gas and diesel.
fsm = factory service manual.

ive locked many a cam, the books show how.
some cams have hex flats to use wrenches (mazda)
others DOCH use cam cog wheel locks
others have SOHC, cam pin hold that you lock with a simple drift pin
the FSM shows this fact, on all cars made. any engine.
not only that you didnt say what step you got stuck?
of the 50 steps.
at the crank pulley,? 1st steps? or are you locking the cam
so you can time the belt. (way far in to install section)
??????????
