Question about 1992 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

Jeep Just shuts off and also seems like it has a loss of power.

I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. As I am driving it just shuts off but then starts right back up. When going at a faster speed it kinda jumps. Like it dies but then starts back up automatically. Sometimes when it is idleing it will just shut of as well. Also when I am going up a hill as I gas it, it just seems to lose power. If it is on cruise control and I am coming up to a hill the Jeep itself will just downshift and it basically sounds like it is flooring itself to make it up the hill. Also when you get on it from a stop it still just lacks a lot of power. Other than that the Jeep runs great. I changed the "tps" to see if it would help with the lack of power and it did but not much. I just don't know what it could be. My guess is a mixture of fuel pump and "cps". If any one has any idea please let me know. Thanks soo much for your time.

I checked the fuel pressure at an idle it was holding correct pressure and I got it to stall to see if I lost pressure. It held, but i left the gage on overnight to see if it would drop and it did it lost a lot if not all pressure. I checked the codes and it isn't telling me anything it shows nothing is wrong. The only doubt I have about the "cps" being bad is if so it should die when I hit a bumped. Because once they go completely bad there is no starting the car. I had one on a 96 Cherokee go bad on me. But I was just assuming that it could be in it's early stage of going bad.

In a perfect world, computers and related systems are a great addition to the automotive industry...But, You would not dream of using your PC in the backyard, in the rain, snow and searing heat. Yet the system in your car is asked to do that daily. (would be nice if a little button like on a chicken would pop out of a failed component to tell you it's not well.....Your guesses are valid, but before you go out and buy parts, have a code scan done and see what's there. Codes give you a direction to begin looking, they don't get really specific, but when added to what you already see and know can be very helpful. Fuel pump problems don't show codes though so you may need to do a pressure test. CPS will sometimes throw a code, but they can also cause strange problems without doing that. The largest problem I see right now is that it starts right back up, giving you no time to do testing. The random on/off thing suggests the possibility of a bad connection either at the computer or ignition switch. You can try wiggling the harness a bit and see if you can get it to stall.
It would not surprise me if it took a while to find this problem as this is the type of thing that drives even good shops crazy.

A cps is pretty much a fine wire coil wrapped around a center core (same as a lawnmower magneto pickup newer ones are slightly different but work essentially the same.) It surprises me that they fail so often being such a simple component. But Quality control and the quality of materials used makes them so. If there is a thin spot on the windings it can deteriorate and begin to short. It's not so much influenced by bumps as it is by humidity, temperature etc. the location of the short determines what kind of problem it causes, till it completely fails. When it's working, testing will not show a problem as the "break" will have proper conductivity, making test invalid.
What I'm getting at is that yes, it may be failing, but the part isn't cheap, and they aren't fun to replace, therefore I'd want better info before replacing it.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 8Cyl4.7L When when driving over 50 miles per hour will lose all power whats wrong?

When you say it loses power, do you mean electrical power or engine power ?
You would need to look at the fuse boxes for a loss of electrical power, and use a scanner or code reader to check the computer for trouble codes for a loss of engine power.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Power Loss

a bad cam sensor will cause vehicle to shut off while driving, and cause a hard time starting. but this usually sets a trouble code p0340. scan vehicle to see if any codes come up. after it is fixed, erase codes with a obd2 scanner. if you do not have one, you can go to any auto parts store and they will erase codes for free.

Jeep won't go over 60 mph loss of power

Check for a clogged catalytic conveter or weak fuel pump. Remove the O2 sensor so exhaust can flow out hole and test drive it. If it's better replace the cat or look for kinked or dented section of the exhaust. If it didn't help, have the fuel pressure tested as well as the ignition advance and timing chain.
