Clicking in stickshift when I shift gears

Manual transmission. Stick shift clicks sometimes when shifting gears. Stickshift also chatters in gear while driving

The clicking could be due to worn shifter linkage bushings. As for the chatter you may need to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel.

SOURCE: transmission does not go into 3 and 4th gear

This could be;

  • A faulty clutch
  • Worn or damaged gear linkage
  • Incorrectly adjusted gear linkage

SOURCE: Subaru won't start

You've got to assume that the trans oil change is unrelated. With the key in the run position see if the wipers work, if not the battery is dead. Otherwise, try rocking the car back and forth while in park and then hope for a miracle. If all fails, get out the volt meter and start measuring voltages at the starter and the power pack (coil).

There is a locking solenoid under the plastic shroud around you shifter. When you put on your brake the solenoid is supposed to pull back to release the shifter.
The buzzing you are hearing is that solenoid trying to pull back. Going to have to replace it.

auto as in automatic transmission? proper ATF level needs to be verified, no dip stick involved, a plug screw and proper operating temperature are used.
If the transmission is bad, consider converting to stick shift. If it's already a stickshift, check the fluid level and condition of fluid

Hello, The first thing you need to have someone look at is the Brake pedal lever under the dash. This part of the starter Interlock system is the one which requires you to have your foot on the Brake before trying to start the car. With a Stickshift the switch can be on the clutch lever.

The underdash control switch often gets hit by the Driver's feet when entering or exiting the vehicle. Both Automatics and the Stickshift share this problem. Check and see if a switch looks broken or crooked in a holder.

The car has an Interlock switch to cut off power to the starter if the Gearshift is not in Park or Neutral(Stickshift). The idea is to prevent someone from starting the car in a travel gear. Any forward or reverse gear is a travel gear. The shift linkage may not be lining up to the correct gear.
The shift linkage may be out of adjustment or stretched.

Call your Dealer and ask if they have any TSB's for problems on your car if you find the problem to be in the shifter. I remember similar problems in one series of small Ford products, but can not reference it now.

If it is a stickshift then the shifter is messed up you might have to take it to the shop to have them replace it

The stickshift goes round and round. cant get it into gear.


the linkage on your stick shift has probably broken off the cable that goes to your tranny

Vehicle throttle and gear shifting


check the tension in the throttle cable on the throttle body for the pedal and if its an automatic and shifting hard change the tranny fluid for starters if it dont get fixed by then you may have to tae it to a shop, if its manual then it may be the operator just let tha clutch go slowly and smoothly nd thats the way to quit a stickshift from jumpin most of the time

Can't shift into first unless car is not running. When my car is turned off i can shift easily. when my car is turned on it is impossible to shift . it will not move at all


Assuming its a stickshift car, check the clutch master cylinder, line to slave unit and slave for any leaks. If master is full, it may be internally bypassing It is possible to shift with engine off because nothing is turning. If clutch is not disengaging, with engine running you can't do that, because the clutch disengages the transmission from the engine so the gears can mesh.

Assuming its a stickshift (you didn't say) it's likely your clutch isn't working properly...either low fluid level or clutch is worn.

Two problems okay..


For the key issue, try shooting some wd-40 into the tumbler, and working the key a bit. If that doesn't correct the issue, eventually you will need to replace the tumbler.

The hard shift is most likely not related to the clutch. As long as the vehicle has good acceleration, and you don't feel slipping, the clutch is fine. The issue may be related to a damaged cable, or to the linkage at the transmission itself.
