Question about 2005 Nissan Xterra
If it is not opening from the inside, open it from the outside and check to see if the child safety lock is engaged. Disengage this and it should be fine.
If it is not opening from the outside then the clip that secures the operating rod may have detached or broken. That will usually involve removing the door card.
If you are not sure how to do this, Haynes usually provide excellent manuals in Auto stores or online that will guide you. You may also find an online video that details the process.
If the clip has popped off, it is straightforward to reseat it.
If it is broken you will have to get a replacement from eBay or your local dealer or junkyard.
